When I run memtest 86, what is it telling me? How long should I run it and what am I looking for? I am trying to diagnose a problem with either my mobo or the memory.

When it starts press C to go to configuration and set it to run all tests, one time through with no errors should be good. Maybe just leave it on overnight to be safe.

I've never gotten errors while running it, but i've seen pictures hehe. The bottom portion of the screen is where the errors appear. If you beleive you have memory errors, i say let it go at least a good 12 hours.

Memtest86 will run in a constant loop until you reboot the PC. Generally speaking, if you get through 1 pass you should be good to go, unless you're hunting for a intermittant memory issue.

Memtest basically writes test patterns to your RAM, reads them back and compares the value. If it doesn't get back what it wrote, then it reports and error.

I've had issues with the program locking up in test 2 on 865GE-based motherboards. Even though the system runs perfectly stable otherwise. Overall I've found it to be an immensly useful tool and a great addition to my bag of tricks :-P
