Background: I have a Biostar M7NCD Pro nforce 2 motherboard and an athlon barton 2500+ cpu. I have downloaded the latest bios for the motherboard and the latest chipset drivers from nvidia. I have PC 2700 Centon (yes, i know it is crap) ddr ram that I recently purchased. I also have kingston and crucial PC2100 ddr ram.

My problem is that windows xp reboots itself after the welcome screen unless I run the RAM at 100 MHz. I have tried running the Centon module by itself at 166 MHz and 133 Mhz, but windows xp reboots after the welcome screen.

I repeated the same procedure with the Kingston and Crucial RAM. They will only post at 100 mhz, even though they are supposed to run at 133 (and the Centon is supposed to run at 166). I have tried tweaking the memory settings (making the cas numbers as high as possible), but the problems still occur.

Somebody told me it might be a power supply issue, so I purchased a new one. However, the problem still persists. I have also removed all devices except for hard drive, memory, video card, and cpu - and the problems still occur.

I ran memtest and it shows errors in all 3 modules when I run them at 166 and 133 (I ran them all separately). I RMA'ed my crucial stick, and the replacement is showing errors as well.

Do you think its a motherboard issue? Or am I unlucky enough to have received 4 bad sticks of RAM? Or am I just doing something completely idiotic? Please help!

Have you tried setting the BIOS to SPD, and then trying one stick at a time?

It could be your motherboard i suppose since you've had so many different defective sticks. I wouldn't run different RAM speeds and brands togethor. Thats just asking for trouble. You shouldn't need to loosen the timings. If anything you should be able to run them more aggressive. Maybe the Motherboard just isn't compatible with those brands of RAM? If your getting any errors at all there is something wrong with the RAM or Motherboard one.

Do you have another motherboard you can test the sticks in?

Your Power Supply could also being causing a power fluxuation in voltage to the RAM and that could affect it also.

So you need to test Motherboard and PSU now.

I've also tried setting the BIOS to SPD and trying one stick at a time. Windows XP will reboot after the welcome screen for all 3 modules that I own. I've also replaced the power supply with an Entech 420 watt. I had an entech 250 watt prior - so I thought that might have been the culprit. The change has not resolved any of the problems though.

Thanks for the advice. I will see if I can find another motherboard to test. Any other ideas?
