Memory Compatibility Issues

I just installed XP on a brand new AMD 64 system with 1G of Kingston HyperX 2-2-2-6. Every now and then I get a weird blue screen of death and the system reboots. The one I managed to catch listed Memory_Management as the cause (0x0000001a). I have the latest BIOS for my AOpen AK86-L board so that shouldn't be a problem. Microsoft's website was of little help. Can anyone lead me in the right direction?

If I am not mistaken the AMD 64 requires registered ECC dims

Is yours ECC?

No, the 64 processors do NOT require registered ECC memory. Only the FX line requires registered memory.

First, disable the automatic restart option so you can actually read the BSODs.

Right click My computer, Properties, Advanced tab..., Startup and Recovery button, uncheck Automatic Restart.

Now, you might want to try memtest86 to test your RAM sticks individually. If the RAM generates errors, it's either 1.) RAM stick is bad, or 2.) your timings are too aggressive, or 3.) the RAM needs more voltage.

Wrong, the opterons also require registered ECC, and the FX will be dropping that requirement when it goes to 939.

But, back to the question. Heat, poor PSU regulation, video card issues, RAM, all of these things can cause BSODs like you describe. Need more info to troubleshoot.

BillLeeLee, I'll run that memtest as soon as I get home. I doubt that my memory timings are too agressive. I'm running the memory at what it's rated at and this is BH5. Perhaps I need more voltage as I am running stock memory voltages. It's definately not heat issues. Everything is actually fairly cold to the touch (not that I've been touching any circuitry :)) The video card and all the rest of the hardware (with the exception of memory and cpu which I cant test elsewhere) work fine in other systems. I'm starting to believe that its either a bad install of Xp (had a few errors during install), Mb compatibility, or memory. Thanks for the help. Any more input is welcome.

just a note - if the heatsink is cold to the touch it might be that it actually doesn't make good contact...

I considered that posibility, but upon further inspection I found that all sinks provide plenty of contact. Cold might be an overstatment, however nothing is even warm to the touch. I do have a pretty good airflow setup.

I'd be really interesting to hear from anyone using BH5 memory in conjunction with the AK86 series boards.

i was having the same problem although i have differnt RAM and Proc. but, bump the voltage to +1 volt, Alot more stable

bump

gonna run memtest as soon as I get home.

Any possibility that this is just bad install of XP? I did have a few problems upon installation...possibily due to installing off of a dvd drive. A coworker GAVE me :) as plextor cdrw so I'm gonna go home and try that as well.

MemTest is rebooting on me right from the start. Still not sure if this is a result of a bad install or memory/mb compatibility issues. I'm gonna try creating the memtest cd from another puter and try again. If still no worky, I'll play with memory voltages. Does anyone know where I should start at with the voltage? It's supposed to be 2.6V...should I start there or higher?
