I would agree about same or similiar cards multi gpu systems.

I experienced very positive results with my two 8800GT's. They are different models, but the one that was not OC'd from teh factory got teh primary slot so I could OC it and the one that came OC'd from the factory got teh second slot since I could not overclock it very easily. It did eventually work where I could OC both cards.

Upping shaders is good for a tweak, but my PNY8800gtx is not playing nice with Riva+folding. The more I touch shaders, the more frequent I get EUE's. I must have a 'bad' GTX. Default settings and no tweaks for my GPU is a measly 44-4600ppd.

Sunin - I saw someplace else in the forum, a nicely detailed cause=effect of your efforts from a bout a month ago (I think) is that still current? If so, I should use that as reference for tweaking.
 
Thanks nomad8u! I was not aware that if there were 2 different GPUs folding you would lose production on the second card. This should be discussed more on this forum.

Your impression is right. I was talking from the cheap perspective only. 2x 8800GT ~$200 = ~8-9kppd whereas 1 GTX260 would give ~6.7kppd but cost ~$270. A 9800GTX would outperform the 8800GT(X).
2x 9800GTX would give even more production 10-12kppd for about ~$340, but this set up would require a very beefy power supply.

Well depends on the thread... I think you have more to get out of those 260's it maybe they are not being fed well or they are fighting over the same core. I set mine up using the environmental strings. See page 3 of the GPU Folding Guide where I talk about how to do that.

In general I have found that the easiest, least touchy feely setup on WinXP is 1SMP and up to 2 GPUs. This will be good for around 12k PPD and requires a 500w+ PSU.

Vista on the other hand is a monster!!!! my 8800GTS on my HTPC(newly installed) is only requiring 4-6% CPU usage. I find that odd, considering that XP is 16-20%. What I am wondering is if Vista is reporting total usage over all 4 cores and thus is it using 4-6% of each core or a total of 24% max... If that is truly not the case VISTA is going to go in every single box I own! The difference is just too damn huge to ignore!





 
Think of how SMP cannot use 4 cores very efficienly for now so we run 2 clients to use all. A GTX 260 / 280 is probably hungry for bigger proteins so they are just leveling off while 2x9800GTX for the same price as a GTX 280 will produce much more than this (using 2 clients to get more production).

Look at ATI, it has potential to do more points than a NVIDIA cards due to the amount of shaders but so far, no proteins is big enough to utilize all the power.

If you want to buy a card solely for folding, a 8800GT or 9800GTX would be a great choice depending on your budget and power supply. I bought a GTX 260 (with the intention to step up to the GTX 280 or GT200b card by the end of september) since I also wanted something for gaming and which can last a few years.

Scott LeGrand himself commented that while the shaders amount play a role, shaders speed play a bigger role.

available shaders/cpu's
OS, VM sessions
Price, both acquisition and operating

Soley for folding, 2-8800gts sounds reasonable. For double duty, 1 or 2 9800gt(x?) would be sweet spot. So long as the wife never looks at the bills, dual 260's would be nice.

daily, doulbe duty ~$1500
Maxed out ~$divorce
