CAT5 consists of 4 twisted pairs that each form more or less a balanced transmission line. They aren't as susceptable to interferance as you may think, nor do they radiate large amounts of noise.

There is sheilded CAT5 for really extrodinarily noisy environments, but it's the exception rather than the rule.

Oh, and my $00.02 is don't be cheap and get some decent CAT5E....only a few pennies a foot more, and trust me, it's worth it.

okay, but i must say that shielding is very much needed espicaly when hanging over floresent lights, also if u want the nicest quality and less packet loss shielded is awsome to have.

Just keep in mind that sheilded cable such as the cat5 you speek of requires diffrent termination than if it were unsheilded. Failure to terminate it wiht the right parts will make the run more vounerable to noise than if it were just normal twisted pair.
 
Unless the shielding is grounded you just created a really good noise antenna. Shielded is not really neccessary - I put cat 5 in my house from one side to the other (prolly around 125feet) and it's zippy, but then again 100MB is as fast as I go.

The current network tech in cabling is just awesome - the punchdown blocks built into the wall jacks, the relatively thin cables that can be run anywhere.. It's a far cry from the thickwire that needed to be tapped only at certain intervals just ten years ago. Running CAT5 is an easy way to get your home up to speed and 100Mbps should be acceptable bandwidth for the forseeable future.

Unless you have the bucks to jump to wireless G, the cat5 option makes the most sense, and the wire is dirt cheap.
 
If you're nearing the max length, why not just install a switch somewhere in the middle? Length problem solved + less interference (if ther was any to begin with).

Well, because it is un-nessary. Eventhough I don't like to, I have on occasion made runs in exess of 360ft over floresent lights, next to power lines useing normal cat5E with NO prolems at 100mbit. Things may be a little diffrent at gigE speeds, but in my own exprence STP is often not needed and you can go a little bit over spec. distance wise with no problems.

Think about it, do you thing the person who installs runs at a busniess etc auctually measures the cable out? Ive been on jobsites where the foreman walks in, says put in x number of runs from here to here, leave serice loops coiled in the walls, and come back next week to terminate when teh walls are done.
