Well it used to be Matrox's party trick that their 2D quality was the best. In fact the setup to have back in the early days of 3D was a Matrox Millenium teamed with a Voodoo2 3dfx card so you got the best of both worlds.
Certainly their cards do have good 2D. The Parhelia and the P650/750 range boast about their 10bit output abilities but they are only of interest to Photoshop addicts as their 3D performance wouldnt blow the top off a rice pudding. However, Nvidia etc. have upped their game and it wouldnt surprise me if you would be hard pressed to tell the difference.
I have always had a soft spot for Matrox since my days of the Mystique and the M3D. I feel they are the one company that if they really tried to bring out a decent powerful 3D contender that folks would consider moving from Nvidia or ATI. They were a very trusted and reliable brand. I dont think it will ever happen however, far too late.

Matrox's focus is mainly on high-end, high-profit markets, such as medical imaging, CAD and such. Because of this, however, the 2D image quality of Matrox cards is indeed superior to mainstream cards, such as those from nVidia and ATi.
The markets they currently supply with their products are simply far too profitable and require entirely different cards than the gaming market.
The Parhelia is the only card which can somewhat compete in today's mainstream market (aside from the price, that is). Matrox producing videocards for the gaming market would be very unlikely, even less likely than Apple switching to x86daglesj said:

i have a g450.. umm.. i have no idea if it is better or worse than my IGP.. the igp on this board is an mx4000.. it is slower in 3d though, i know that.. however i got the card for nder $20 shipped from newegg.. there are tons of matrox cards on ebay..

Matrox back in the day had much better signal conversion than other companies, the gap has narrowed a lot since then though, and if there is a difference it's probably hard to notice. (A while ago I had to step back to a geforce 2 after my 5600 died, and the quality on the GF2 was poor, the image was very murky. Now I'm running a 6600GT, and the quality is very nice again.) None of this applies to DVI connections, which don't convert the signal to analog.
