So I have an x800xt and an AMD 3400+ clawhammer. I was wondering how much I should overclock my processor to get it running fast enough for my card or if I am even going to see a large difference in gaming at all.
 
Overclock it for whatever you can get out of it. Your processor is fast enough to make having a card like that worthwhile. Every CPU limits the capabilities of the machine somewhat. However until a massive architectural change happens that increases IPC or unless the clock speeds suddenly shoot through the roof, there won't be any huge jumps above a A64 running at 2.6GHz or so.

Now if your lucky enough or you purchase the equipment needed to break 3GHz with an A64, you'll probably see some pretty massive gains. Short of that I wouldn't worry too much.
 
the only reason I really ask is because I have a shuttle and the cooling isn't as good as I would get out of a normal case. I would like to purchase a new mobo and case and get really good cooling and overclock the shit out of it but its just not in my budget. I am strictly going on a heat issue here so I was just wondering what would be enough to get as much juice out of my card as possible while not damaging anything.
 
Best thing to do is try it. Overclock a little at a time, test for stability, monitor the temps and keep going until you run into problems. Then back off the speed when you do run into issues. Then test some more. And your done.
