Hello,

I am relatively new to these forums, so go easy on me! I am looking to build a computer strictly for gaming. It has to be small for transportation and powerful to play CS:S at the highest resolutions (1920x1080 - 2560x1156) without any FPS drops below 100. I don't need to hear about the human eye lecture, the eye may not feel a difference but the servers do! Anyways, I know I can build a computer now that will achieve my goal but I want to wait for the SG07 from SilverStone. So here is my current thought:

SilverStone SG07 (600w?)
DFI LANParty MI P55-T36 LGA 1156
G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB DDR3 1600
ATI 5870 (Possibly 5970 depending on funds) or Nvidia equivalent
Intel Core i5-750
Western Digital Scorpio Black WD3200BEKT 320GB 7200 RPM
LITE-ON Black 8X Slim Slot-Load DVD

Again, this will primarily be for competitive gaming and LAN tournaments. Also I would like to do some video editing for Counter-Strike clips and want to know if the i7 is worth the premium over the i5. CS:S is a single-threaded game, so I know the i5 and i7 will act the same for that as well. However, I don't know how much quicker the i7 will be over the i5 in programs like Vegas and VirtualDub. So, I come to the HardForum for suggestions on making my build cheaper and better. There is a budget, just nothing outrageous. I will be buying these piece piece, with the lesser important parts first like the case, CD, and HDD.
 
Looks good to me...you can get G Skill low voltage ram you know. They have low timings and work great.
 
FYI

I've got same mobo, CPU and G.Skill ECO 2x2GB 1.35v and it works great. Now only if I can get 450w PSU or SG07 I can complete it but it's just sitting and collecting dust for now.
 
Thanks for the replies. I have built a lot of computers in my past so I knew what I was picking out, but I haven't built a Core iX machine yet. I will be sure to add the low voltage ram to the list. :p
 
This is my first iX build too and was originally going for lower latency Ripjaws myself. That changed when I saw ECO and even though Ripjaws looked nicer than ECO's, I couldn't pass up 7-8-7-24@1.35v just for looks.

This will do the job for you. I have a very similar setup albeit in an SG05 and a 5770 and I am VERY pleased with it so far. Interestingly enough it was the first computer I ever built myself so I was very shocked when I had very few problems with everything.

You wouldn't be able to run the CS:S benchmark at 1920x1080 or 2560x1156, would you?

He should be close to 100. CS:S is largely CPU intensive as well, so the 1156 turbo-boosting CPU's are great. Most likely though, he'll have to turn AA down or off; I stay around 70-150+ with my GTX260, all things up except HDR (dark areas are bad for competition), and 4xAA. Rest of the system is in the sig.
 
I'll see what i can do. Never played CS:S tho so I'm not sure what i have to get to run this?

If you download Steam (www.steampowered.com) and purchase Counter-Strike: Source ($20), then that should be everything you need.

I don't know if you use Steam, but it is a pretty good solution for purchasing games. Source is also pretty fun. :p
