Just in time for the holiday shopping season, a new study finds that many retailers are easy to hack. Of the 3,000+ retail stores monitored, half had systems vulnerable to hacking.

AirDefense Inc., an Atlanta-based maker of security products for wireless data systems, found that about 25 percent of the stores' 4,748 wireless access points were exchanging data with no encryption at all to mask the information. Another 25 percent were using an outdated encryption method called Wireless Equivalent Privacy that AirDefense said is easily cracked by thieves using widely available tools.

Greeeeeeaaaaaat. Looks like I'll be paying cash at the register this year...

Why do they need to use wireless? If they own the building they can easily install cat5 to the cash registers / main computers.

Ugh

As long as there are no penalties or costs for exposing customers data. When businesses are held accountable for identity theft and credit card fraud, our data will be locked down tight.
