Man this client is fast

So, since I'm not home to install my 280GTX and fire up some Q9450+280GTX folding power, I thought I'd see if I could get the GPU2 client installed on my laptop (8800mobile SLI and 2.6 Core 2 Duo). This thing rips through WU. In the 10 hours I let it run overnight it folded 5 WU and there was a 6 hour internet outtage. Completion time for the 5001 and 5002 units were around 45-50 minutes.

Very nice times! I'm thinking about building just a bare folding box with a AMD 5000+BE and a 8800GTS 640 meg. I'll have to see when I get home.

Aren't you a bit concerned running the GPU client on your laptop? I know some run the other clients on their laptops and I have in the past as well, but I'm imagining how hot the GPU must get on a mobile computer...?

I'm sure the points will show up eventually. I'm wondering if Stanford is experiencing any server issues with the deluge of results they must be receiving from all the newly installed GPU clients.

I just got a 8800GTS 512MB and it screams through the new WU's, and it turns out a decent PPD of about 4500 or so. Plus there are tons of rebates on them at Newegg, so it's a good time to buy. Although it'll be interesting to see how the new AMD 4850 & nVidia 9800GTX+ will change the landscape, because they are supposed to be less then $200 cards, and right now the 8800GTS 512MB cards go for around $230.

The work server was down again for about an hour last night at about 12:30 AM PST, so this is perfectly possible. However, my points have gone through regardless.

I had 2 SMP WUs drop early Friday morning, ~3AM, and it took almost 8 hours for the points to post. No problems since then though.

Yeah, it's much like a small nuclear reactor in your lap. I don't intend to run it too much. I was just kinda bored and decided to play around with it. I'll probably play with it some more until I get home, but not much beyond that.

you can use the client that's around now, but you have to use drivers with a hacked .inf....xilikon has the links there for the hacked 177.35 .inf file to enable 8 and 9 series cards (those drivers are specifically for GTX 260/280)
