i want to take my st45sf sff psu for an itx build im planning, cut the wires, solder on some connectors, and use a pp05 short cable set with it. is this remotely possible? theyre both silverstone, and other than that its just wiring so i assume it would be alright. just looking to ask the pros if this is possible, and i possibly for some help along the way. :)

As long as you make sure everything is wired correctly, it should be fine.

ooh zero has seen this thread! ok that means its definitely possible, and i will probably be appealing to you for help at some point. lets start with "where do you buy the plastic connectors and the pins?"

dang i asked in a casemod thread where a guy has done a lot of custom psu connectors. hopefully that and a google search will turn up a site or two.

ekuest, I would recommend that you try using the ST45SF first before thinking about doing any cable mods. The cables that come with ST45SF are already shorter than regular ATX PSUs designed for tower cases. The PP05 short cable kit also has similar length cables to the ones already attached to ST45SF.

I have a quick question is it even possible to sleeve the ST45SF???
it seems like it is near impossible to undo the wire from the connector itself
is it me or the way it is design is not meant for sleeving???

well yeha it was going to depend on whats on there. i got the pp05 a while ago thinking i was gonna get a modular strider psu but then changed my mind. i am most likely going to leave the connectors i need (24 pin, a couple pcie plugs, mobo 4-pin, etc) on there and then just snip the wires i dont need and then put female plug on there so i can use them in the future if i need them. its more for getting rid of the extra cables than for the modularity of it.

should be about the same as the connectors on any psu. you need a special tool to do it right, and even with the tool it takes some getting used to before youre good at it. you usually cant get them out by hand or with a screwdriver or anything.

Here is the problem, I do have a ATX Connector Removal Tool.
and i have never ran into a problem before with other PSU like HX850 HX620 or a cheap 200W SFX PSU
but this time the ST45SF is driving me nuts!
I have spent more than 40min just try to removing ONE SINGLE WIRE off the connector! and STILL NOT BEING ABLE TO T_____T
i have tried to use the connector removal tool and staples but it just wont come out
i dont want to force it out and break something and i know from my past experience that u dont need much strength to get the cable out...
so i m wondering if the ST45SF is a little diff and require a diff tool, or maybe it not meant for sleeving???

interesting. i'll have to give it a shot when i get mine. i need to get a pin removal tool though. sounds like it might be a more difficult task than i thought. :/

Well in any case, I hope Tony Ou from Silverstone here can answer our question.
Cause I would really like to know how to get the wires off the connectors and then sleeve this sexy PSU.

Yea, some pins are really stubborn. I gave up in the end with 3 pins left stuck in the atx connector and went with a new connector. For the life of me, I tried for hours trying to remove that 3 pins... I would suggest you do the same but you will need a crimping tool and some crimp connectors.

can someone please guide me???
i just tried on my other PSUs again and i can pull the wire out in less than 3 seconds...
however the ST45SF, no matter what i try it just wont come out! not even a SINGLE ONE! it beens hours!!!
AHHHHHH THIS IS FRUSTRATING!!!

Edit: now my finger is bleeding but it still won't come out

Sorry KeymaN, looks like I won't be able to help if you are having that much trouble. While the connector we use is standard, there are still some small variances in size between different model PSUs so this may have prevented you from removing them easily. Perhaps you can ask for help from the place where you purchase the connector removal tool?

"where do you buy the plastic connectors and the pins?"

First you need to get part numbers for the connectors you want. You can get most of them from http://www.playtool.com/pages/psuconnectors/connectors.html#pciexpress

Unfortunately the 8-pin PCIe connectors seem to be made of unobtainium, with none of the major manufacturers admitting to selling them. The only thing I can suggest is buying an adaptor and dismantling it with a pin extractor.

Once you have the part numbers you can then search for them on electronics suppliers like mouser, Newark and digikey.

actually i ended up finding everything at frozencpu, even the 8-pin pcie ones. :)

yea, got mine from frozen cpu too but shipping to Canada was a killer. Still cheaper than buying an adapter from ++++ tho.. haha
