Making a disk array

I would like information on how I could put several harddrives in one case for a RAID array or something like that. I don't want to use PATA at all if I can avoid it. The Maxline III SATA drives could do the trick in my environment.

All my network will be running off of this array by the time I am finished. Any good ideas?
 
umm, get a RAID card?

to make a network disk... get a micro ATX board and an old CPU and make a file server. thats better then networked storage anyway.
 
I have a server online now. I don't want to use the server for file storage and an application server. I want to create a seperate array of disks, as a toy as much as anything.

The question is, how do I do that without paying through the nose?

That's wicked actually. I don't know if I have the expertise to build something THAT fancy, but now I know what I am up against. What O/S is on that thing?

If you want a self contained logical drive they are very expensive because they aren't used for anything besides enterprise level applications. If you gave more specific information we could help you out. A raid array isn't much of a toy, you set it up and if you do it properly, and you shouldn't ever have to touch it.
 
Ok, I want to use 5 Maxline III SATA HDDs and I want it hooked into my network to serve applications and files. Right now I have installs scattered all over the network. Well, now I want to consolidate everything. I will eventually be building a rack, but that won't be for quite a while yet, so in the meantime I want to plunk a box down on the floor beside the server like I used to do with USB 2.0 portable units and forget about it.
