Please bear with me. I want to be as thorough as possible in explaining what I have done. I've been at this problem for 5 days with no luck. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
I'm trying to fix a major computer problem for a friend. His specs are:
Asus P4G8X Deluxe
P4 3.06 HT
512MB Corsair XMS
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro XT
WD HDD (unknown size)
IBM Deathstar (unknown size)
Hercules Fortissimo III 7.1 Sound
Leadtek Winfast TV2000 XP Deluxe
The reason I don't know HDD capacity is the comp is currently running CPU burn in and I don't wanna mess with it right now.
Anyway, he brought the comp to me after complaining that it wouldn't power on at all. Long story short, I removed the HSF to find that the CPU was stuck to the bottom of the HSF! The lock down lever on the socket was still down in the locked position, but with very little effort I was able to pull both the HSF and CPU up. The reason the CPU was dislodged from the socket is that the massive, all-copper, Zalman HSF pulled it loose during transport. Anyway, I inspected the CPU and there were no bent/missing pins so I cleaned the Artic Silver off, applied new AS and reinstalled the HSF and CPU. The comp booted fine on the first try. So, he brings it back to his place and now it would restart at the Windows boot logo nearly every time. So, he brings it back to me and I've been at this for 5 days with no success. Below is a listing of nearly everything that I've done.
1) I first removed all hardware except cpu, mem, HDD, CDROM, and vid card. Then, formatted the Western Digital drive (which is where Windows is locared) and reinstalled windows. Upon installation of CAT 4.8 drivers, it would begin restarting at boot logo again and upon removal everything seemed to clear up.
2) The next day, the comp began restarting at boot logo again so I popped in my GeForce 4 Ti 4200 and the problem persisted. This rules out the Radeon or the CAT drivers.
3) Formatted again, but this time I could not even finish the Windows installation. The computer would reboot at various points along the installation anywhere from formatting to finishing installation. Thinking this was a hard drive problem, I put the drive in my computer and was able to install windows without a hitch. Was even able to install all my drivers, install programs and get online. Not a single problem restarting in windows or during boot up. This rules out the hard drive.
4) So, I found the ultimate boot cd and began running diagnostics.
memtest 86 and memtest 86+ ran fine without a hitch with 4 passes each and 100% pass.
CPU burn-in ran through 4,000,000 iterations and the comp did eventually restart. However, I am running it again as I type this and it has been going nearly 4 hours and 20,000,000+ iterations without a problem.
The newest version of DLGDIAG (western digital diagonostic tool) would not run at all however, the older version would and the drive passed all tests. Did the same for the Deathstar and, amazingly, it passed.
5) Finally got frustrated and completely disassembled the machine. Took out the mobo and upon visual instection it looks fine. The socket doesn't appear to be damaged and I didn't see any missing resistors, burst capacitors or anything blatently wrong. Reassembled it tonight, even using new IDE cables. Double and triple checked my connections and the comp still refuses to finish an installation of Windows. Many times it won't even get past the initial part where you select the drive you wish to install windows on.
I am frustrated as hell. It can't be a cooling problem, if it were I wouldn't be able to run CPU burn in as long as I have. Memory has past the tests, hard drive works in other computers, and the same problem happens with different video cards installed. I'm thinking that it has to be someting with the mobo. If it is, why would I be able to run all these diagnostic tools back to back without the comp restarting, yet anytime I try to do something with Windows, it starts acting up? I'm confused? Thanks for reading this far and any help is greatly appreciated. It's going on 4:00AM and I'm going to bed. Thanks again.
