Finally broke my old Quantum 13gig drive [ it had died, it was a good drive to :( ] open and got at the magnets..


But, their frail as hell. First time I accidentally let the magnets collide, a big chunk of one broke off and almost turned to powder.



Now, my question is....is this just because its an old hardrive, so they used a different magnet?


Do they use different, stronger, more durable magnets in newer drives?
 
heh...I've got about 3 dozen old hard drive magnets stuck on my 'fridge, washing machine, toolbench, just about everywhere!

The newer drives I've got to tear apart, the magnets are smaller and I think a little stronger. You stick one on the 'fridge and you have to scoot it over to the edge to get it off. If you're not careful they can snap together so fast and hard they'll pinch fingers.

I'm on a car BB where some people are using them on their fuel lines, they're playing with the "polarize your fuel for better economy and more power" thing (I'll reserve MHO on that one ;) )

I'm a big guy and I can barely pull them appart, gotta twist them and pry. :\


And yes, I crushed a knuckle today playing with it :D

A painful fact I just learned, putting your nipple in between the two magnets....not a good idea.. :eek:

Your knuckle didn't hold up to well, and you actually expected your nipple to do better?

Well, It felt good till I had to twist the magnets back and forth to get them off... :eek:

I can hear the advertising now..."And when the drive finally crashes, you can take it apart and make some awesome nipple jewelry!"
 
Best magnets I've ever found are in old Seagate full height SCSI drives. There about 2" long and 1" wide, and with two of them they'll hold each other through a 1.5" peice of wood :eek:
