So I posted a problem with my machine not POSTing a week or two ago. I fidled around with it a bit, and all of a sudden it worked fine. It worked for a while, then after a few times of restarting, it went back to failing to POST.
Opened the case back up, pulled on the connector from the PSU to the MB a little, and it started up again. So then I was thinking maybe it was shorting or something somewhere.
Last night it failed again, and I could not get it to turn back on. I gutted the case, pulled everything out. Hooked up the speaker, HSF, ram, and PSU, and tried it. No POST. Swapped the RAM, CPU, PSU, added in the video card, tried without ram...nothing.

So at this point I am thinking that my motherboard after 3 years of faithful service has finally gone under. Any other suggestions or troubleshooting I could try? I was really hoping to wait a few months for a new rig, but I hate to pay for a new MB for an old crappy system.

The exact problems you are describing commonly occur when the CPU is overheating. Reseat your CPU, clean it off and give it a fresh coat of thermal paste. Clean your heatsink and fan thoroughly and reinstall. If you have it overclocked via the BIOS, use the jumper to clear the BIOS. If you have a spare heatsink that is rated for your CPU, you may want to try a different cooling solution.

Did you take everything *out* of the case and try it? You might be right when you thought something was shorting. Maybe a standoff or other part of the case making contact with the motherboard traces.

Ya, i took it all actually out of the case and put it on a table to try it.
