This morning A few of the soldiers in my unit and I went to the shooting range to qualify on the
m249.

I filmed quite a bit with my HDR-1 camcorder and snapped these pictures with my Panasonic Fx7 camera. I resized the images for bandwidth sake.
I am fairly pleased with how the first shot of the munitions turned out.
Btw, it wasn't too cold out, those were actually the m249 barrels heating up from all the rounds we put through them. (and before anyone says anything... we switched them out with new barrels every 200 rounds.)

Any way on with the pics!

Very cool! How long does it take the barrels to cool?

Usually by the time you're ready to change the barrel again you're good to go with the other.

I've seen the barrels turn white because they're so hot, and at night you can see the tracer rounds fly out the barrel as if it were invisible.

*extra info

In the picture the 249's are actually firing m16 30 round magazines.
We had two crates of unlinked munitions that we had left over from last week when we were shooting the m16. The "saw" is actually a pretty decent weapon. You can't zero it perfect for accuracy, but it's not meant for that. The saw is more an assault and suppression weapon.

I'd also like to give a shout out to my fellow brethren currently serving in OEF and OIF you're all ARMY STRONG!

HOOAH!

Letting off rounds is always a relaxing thing. Bad thing is Im old enough to remember when the M60 was the saw. I remember the competition for its replacement too.

Awesome pictures. My best friend is in the Marines and is a SAW gunner. I love pictures like these.

The green is SS109 right? Armor peircing?

You guys switch out barrels after 200? Even in combat? That seems rather soon. I have a friend with an MP5, and we have put 300-400 thru it before letting it cool.

In combat you'll let them roll quite a few more rounds, however the proper timing is 200 rounds. Thats also rating continuous usage for the most part. In combat a lot of those rules are thrown out the window as you can imagine.

Very nice pics.

How about I take that gun from ya...sell it..and then buy you guys some better / matching camo. ;)
