I don't know if this is the best place to post this, so mods feel free to move it to a better location should one exist.

I just recently upgraded my video card. I put in new drivers for it. That is the only thing that has changed with my comp. But, I have just started noticing that whenever I scroll a web page (or move any graphics around the desktop), there is a low fast hum noise. Hard to explain exactly what it sounds like, but it is a fast "duh-duh-duh" type sound.

It is possible that it has been there all along, but I just noticed it since the vid card upgrade. Has anyone ever experienced this issue? Comp is the one in sig, and I have some Z-640s connected to it. I updated my audio drivers to the latest to see if it would resolve the issue, but it didn't help any. I also muted everthing (including master volume), but the noise remains. I really think it is due to the video card, but don't see how that would make any difference.

I think that the hum is caused by either EMI coming from the power supply by way of the unshielded cables or voltage spikes when the graphics card sucks power. You may notice it happening more during games too, during quiet parts. Mine does the same thing, and it does it during the intro of Knights of the Old Republic. I think that OCZ wonder wires might help it a bit.

I called BFG Tech support, and they said they think it is because of the vid card and sound sharing an IRQ. They aren't though. Vid is on 19 and sound is on 20.

Do you think it might help if I switched out power connectors? I have a couple of extra coming off my power supply.
 
This used to happen to me when I used Creative Inspire 5300 speakers (total junk, like 30w RMS for 6 channels, and that's total, not 30wX6 heh) and onboard AC97 sound on my OLD OLD Shuttle AK11 (KT133A/686B)

But... now that I'm using an A7N8X DLX and coaxial soundstorm to my Klipsch preamp, it sounds fine.
 
I never noticed it before the vid card upgrade, and I think I would have. So it has to have something to do with that. Neither my sound card (soundstorm), vid card, or speakers are of bad quality, so I don't think that has anything to do with it.
 
I had a similar problem caused by EMI from my mouse or my monitor. The cord was running near my speaker cord and everytime I scrolled it hummed. Try rearanging your cords.

*Sigh* Oh well I gave it a shot :p Thats what solved my problem anyways, and it was the same thing.

Have you tryed another sound card? :D
 
I think I know exactly what you're talking about. I had this happen as well on my system and it only did it when scrolling a web page. In the end it turned out to be my "Sparkle" power supply...cheapie I know, but it came with the case I ordered and it was in a test system.

So, I removed the PSU and replaced it with a different brand...and no more squeeling :D. Not sure if that'll fix your issue, but it's what fixed mine.

Oh, and to the poster above me, nice username ;). I'm assuming you watch Alias...excellent show! (and if you don't watch it shame on you :p).

ARGH!!! Why does everyone ask me that? What is Alias and when is it on? I guess I should catch it, and see what its all about.
 
Well, I have recently replaced my PS with an Antec True Power 430, so that should be alright I would think. I checked my rails as I was scrolling around a page and they stayed consistant.

As far as the show Alias... It is a great show. The 4th season starts on January 5th. It should come on around 8:00 Central. ABC. The first 3 seasons are on DVD.

What day of the week? I'm gonna have to watch it next time its on. Everyone ask me if thats where I got. I used Alias because thats kind of what a user name is in a way. So Alias is my ummm...... Alias.
 
Tried that. In fact, I even muted all outputs as well including the master volume. Problem still there.

It reminds me of when you hook up the ground wire of a car stereo to a bad spot and hear the engine through the speakers.

Definitly EMI then. Is anything near your speakers? Anything that uses alot of power? Do you have a CCFL, Glowire, or anything useing a high voltage inverter?
 
The only thing that has changed in or around my system is the video card. I upgraded from a GeForce 4 Ti4200 to a GeForce 6800 OC. The old card did not have to have external power from the PS, but the new one does. I'm thinking that that is causing the problem. If so... how do I fix?
 
I have a similar problem. I have a vanilla 6800 and onboard ac97 sound, antec power. When I do certain things like open windows I get a 'zuhhht' sound. I really think it is the interaction between the 6800 and the onboard sound. Soundstorm is good sound, but it's still onboard. I'll be adding a real sound card in the near future hopefully the problem goes away.

The only other thing i can think of is that my speakers are very near my monitor with the wires running right under it....

maybe if you cover the A/D chip with grounded tinfoil... lol
