I recently put my computer together. The following components were put together

Athlon 64 3000+
BFG Geforce 6800 128mb OC
Gigabyte GA-K8NSC mobo
512 mb ram
Coolmax 400W PS

My 3dmkar03 scores were a miserable 7200. I'm pretty disappointed with the score and thought it would be close to 9000. Also when I run counter-strike source, my fps will drop to the 40-50's during gunfight. When I'm just standing there, it's at about 120 fps. I was expecting the fps to be stable and closer to the 100 fps mark. Anyone have any ideas on what could be wrong?? Any help would be appreciated. :( :(

I'd reccomend getting another 512Mb or RAM and running it dual-channel, but other than that, there isn't anything painfully obviously wrong with your setup.

7200 in 3D03 is way low for that system. I would expect about 13,000 - 15,000 if you get the RAM upgrade.

Is this with a clean install? What's running in the background? Have you scanned for adware and viruses recently? What version of drivers are you running?

I just built everything together. There's barely anything installed on the machines. I put the mobo drivers on and also installed the latest Nvidia graphcis drivers from the Nvidia website. I'm really lost here. It's kind of depressing to put all that money into your machine and have it perform miserably. :(

Make sure you don't have any AA or AF turned on when running 3D03. I don't think anyone does that unless they have a weird reason to, so it would be a bad way to compare scores.

Getting 1GB of system memory isn't going to improve his 3dMark 2003 score.

128Mb on the card probably isn't helping either. Adding more system RAM will not improve your 3dMark score btw, will help a lot in games though.

uhhh guys, don't forget this thing is basically a vanilla 6800, not a GT or an Ultra, since a stock GT gets ~10,000 or so, the score isn't that far off.......

I would expect about 8k, because that is why my 575/1150 6600GT got.

There's plenty of 6800 vanillas getting 5,000+ in Mentok's 3D05 score sheets, and 3D03 scores for the same setups are normally around 1/3 of the 3D05 score. That's why I suggested looking for a 13-15,000 range.

Try getting on your hands and knees and begging your card to unlock its other 4 pipes without artifacting and run 3D03 again.

Sorry, I didn't realize that dual channel RAM doesn't affect 3Dmark performance

The system in my sig (6800OC @16/6 for benching) gets 11,116 in 03, and this was done with the core at the stock 350 accidently, while the memory was at 911. Please don't assume that someone will automatically get 3 times their 05 score in 03, because that is flat out not true in almost all cases, except with very weak gpus such as an fx5200.

I'd suggest trying to unlock your card (see the nVidia forum sticky), see how high Coolbits will let you OC, and follow this very easy to follow Battlefield 2 optimization guide, which will work for a graphics intentsive benchmark like 05. Try OCing your 3000+ a little as well, because a 200MHz OC will show some big performance improvements in cpu limited benchmarks like 05.

for a vanilla 6800 to score that highly, I would suspect that the extra 4 pipelines have been unlocked and the card clocked all to hell....... there is no guarantee that these mods will be successful, so it's not even worth speculating.... those scores you have listed are up there with 6800 Ultras/x850xtpe's........ at least for '03

what does your 6800OC get without unlocking the extra pipes? at "stock" speed? just curious as to whether or not it is significantly faster than the 7200 score the OP got?

Stock I got 9,442. For reference, the highest 05 I have is 4,532 (3D Mark shows 350 core (stock core) and whatever memory speed I restarted with, no matter if I use Coolbits, Rivatuner or PowerStrip, any help to get it to accept a core OC?), but that was done with my internet down, so I had to save the benchmark (anyone know how to get the .3dr file to be added as a project result on the ORB?). In my account it shows a 4,241 high score (@ 430/870, so it accepted my OCs, I dunno why), so that's a little less than 3/8 of my top 03 score.

If you elaborate a tiny bit on what you're wondering I could explain...

After reviewing the ORB at Futuremark, I think your 7200 isn't so bad after all The highest score for someone with a AMD 64 3000+ and your GPU is 8863, and that's OCed to 420/792. The second hghest score is 7192.

Ok, so I was wrong about the 03 scores being about 1\3 the 05 scores. Its just something that I noticed about scores on my system and worked on many of the score comparisons I have done.

we also need to find out what driver version the OP is running, as I know the recent nvidia driver sets are faster than the ones that are usually included with the cards...... like I went from 10,000 with my stock GT to ~11,000 just by running newer drivers...... seems like there can be large performance differences with nvidias drivers and with the rate that they release them, it can be hard to keep track of what revision is the best...... IMHO...

bladeiai: What are you smoking? Look under 03 Project Search & Compare for AMD64 1800-2200MHz with an nVidia 6800 and any drivers, and you'll see a lot of people getting 13k on the third page with single cards.

coolie_d: Yeah, it could be the drivers, but that would only account for about 1/2 of the points swy81 is missing. For reference I used 76.41 and 71.20 drivers in the scores I linked, and my highest 05 was with 77.66 (same as 77.62 WHQL 77.72s, but these fix the overbright video for me).

I have the latest drivers from the Nvidia website installed. I tried the latest drivers from Omega but, it said that those drivers were outdated when I tried to run the CS:Source stress test. Hmmm I'm all out of ideas. :(

HOLY SHT I AM going insane. I just realized that the scores I posted from the ORB a few hours ago a 05 scores. HAHA maybe I am right after all. The best 03 score with a similar setup to Swy81's is over 18,000. The worst one is 4773 and the second-worst one is 7504. So a range of 13-15,000 isn't so far off. Stock 6800's paired with AMD 64 3000-3200's get about 10k, but yours is an OC. On the other hand, it's also 128Mb instead of the more common 256Mb versions.

the most common 6800nu cards are 128mb, not 256mb.

I still don't see how a stock 6800 with 12 pipes is gonna get more than ~9500 on '03..... since the Ultra Extreme at stock is in the ~13,000 ballpark....... >18,000? Yeah, maybe with LN2 cooling.......

What resolution?

The 18,000 scores are from sli'd 6800nus, the top single card scores I've seen are in the 13-14,000 range. It is very easy to get more than 9,500 with a locked 6800nu, just OC it a little (I got ~9,400 at absolute stock, just with all unnecessary processes closed or set to run at low priority (excpet 03, set at realtime priority) and other baisc system tweaks (set 128mb agp apperature size, large swap file, etc.).
theseeker: Unless you have 03 Pro, you can't change the resolution or other benchmark settings.
