Low 3DMark score

Okay, my specs are in my settings, the only bad point is the gfx card and there are several reasons for it, but I should be getting more than I am with it in 3DMark2001.

I ran 3DMark2001 because I knew what my previous card (GF4-440mx) scored and would give a 'direct' comparison, but alas no.

I removed the drivers completely (as far as the program was able to say) using Detonator RIP - if there are better I would gladly try it - and first installed the drivers that came with it and then with the latest 61.77 from nVidia's website, so I think I do have the latest drivers.

My results:
GF4-440mx ~3500
FX 5200 3721

Any ideas of why my increase is so pitifully small? (and no remarks about having a crap card - it didn't cost a lot and can't afford anything better until next month). My friend with a GF3 gets ~8900 and his is only slightly better than my specs (3ghz and 1gb ram).

Considering I was expecting a fairly smooth until later levels Doom3 experience I am kinda disappointed.

From what I hear the FX5200 wasn't exactly a performer. It is a buget card that was outperformed by older generation TI 4x00 cards. Even the Ti4200 blew it away in most benchmarks.

Your performance increase between the 440mx and the 5200 seem correct and to scale.

Good luck to you.

yeah the 5200 was a really shitty card no offense... lots of people seemed to get pissed off about it because the model number was higher they figured it was better, boy were they disapointed.

None taken:)

I knew it wasn't going to be good but I would of thought it would at least reach 5000 3dmarks. I thought I'd be getting something to tide me over till September. Oh well, looks like I might have to sell a kidney or something.

As for being outperformed by Ti4x00, it is getting trounced by a stock GF3 - by 5000 marks!

Oh well, I have a lapped BlueOrb from my old TNT2 Ultra, so a little AS lovin' and I see how far this 'badboy' can go.

Sorry to dredge this up after such a long time, but...

My 3DMark score with the 5200 was only marginally better than the GF4mx440 was so I decided to enable the CoolBits and overclock it.

The original settings were 250/266 on the GPU and Memory respectively, which gave me a crappy 3751 3DMarks2K1 score.

I then ran the Optimise Settings button and it gave me the values of 330/431. However 3DMark2K1 didn't draw anything during the tests.

So I scaled it back and ran a test at 266/300. That completed with 4209.

I cranked it up a notch to 300/333 and completed 3DMark with a healthy 4678.

Then I pushed the GPU a little to far and I couldn't get a decent image at 310 so I had hit the top for the GPU at 300MHz - a nice 50Mhz increase.

Now I pushed the memory to 400 before I allowed it to complete a benchmark. 5432. How much further could it go?

433 gave me 5651, and 466 a cool 5849. 500MHz ran until it got to the tortuous Nature scene and then it gave up rendering properly.

Still that is 61% increase in speed. Not too bad:)

I woud'nt go any farther as it's doesnt seem stable at that speed, I would go down a bit, I did'nt think the 5200 was that bad, but I guess I was wrong, I got around 6,500 3D Marks with my Radeon 9550 (Stock ).

damn..thats some OCing on a budget card, been there. you gotta love that OC though. a good OC like that is gratifying even if it is on a budget card like that. Awesome man!!

Found a Blue Orb that I stuck on my TNT2 Ultra. Uses the same spring clip method as Gainward 5200. Might pop the Gainward stock fanless heatsink, a bit of AS lovin and see if I can't crank the CPU up a little further. The current HS is sure getting hot. The only draw back is the current HS covers the chip and 64mb of the memory - the other 64mb is on the otherside of the board and isn't cooled.

Though looking at it, I might be able to fix the fan from my Tiger chipset HSF to the current heatsink and get some decent airflow across it.

Or I might leave it as some point next month I will hopefully getting the ASUS V9999 6800:)

Note: Hopefully.

Edit: Doom3 is now quite smooth (it had started to chug further I got in) at 800x600 Medium. I had dropped it to 640x480, but now I might be able to get a little further before switching again.
