Sorry if this is slightly OT but I thought this thread would generate the greatest response. My pops is slightly deaf from years of working in a loud environment but he wants an mp3/cd player for xmas. What is the loudest mp3/cd player I can get him with a budget of $100 or so? He would prefer to have it play regular cds as well but it is not as important as it being LOUD (shout intended).

Volume accounts more to the headphones rather than the source. What you can do is buy a headphone amplifier and get good volume from any good pair, rather than buying crappy headphones that are loud but very sharp.

I would also suggest a cd player/headphone amp combo

If he has a lot of cd's and isnt really tech savvy then id get him a decent cd player at bestbuy for around $30, look for ones that can play mp3's and cd's, if he is more tech savvy and has a computer you could get him a sansa mp3 player, ranging from 20 bucks on newegg for the 256mb model to around $60 for the 1gig model (special at BB for christmas i think, check there if you want 512 or 1gig model). If he has more music go with the 1gig model (holds around 400 songs [mp3's]) or go with 256 or 512 model (around 100 songs and 200 songs respectively), also remember, that the smaller mp3 players wont have as good battery life.

Now that thats finished les continue with the amp. There are many good choices out there. There is the pav2v2 (search ebay or electric-avenues.com), go vibe amp v5 (search google). Faith amps. The easiest might be to buy a smaller one from guitar center, although not quite as good sound quality, it will be good and will still amplify the volume a lot. Just call or go on their site.

You can pick up a decent (loud wise) system for 100-125 dollars., if he doesnt have headphones, then id suggest some cheaper iem's or circumaural phones, that would raise the price to 175-200.

If you have any more questions just ask here, as im sure much of us would like to help. Good luck on your purchases.
