I picked up the hd in my sig a couple months ago. I was working on a friends comp with a WD drive. I guess I've just gotten used to the noise, but it struck me how much quieter the WD was when accessing data. Are Seagates normally this loud? I've heard they're supposed to be fairly quiet, so if no one else has this problem, I'll probably RMA it.
 
A Seagate harddrive should almost always be quieter than any Western Digital harddrive. I have heard of people that have gotten noisy seagates and that they didnt last too long. Try downloading their diagnostic software to see if it turns anything up.

My panaflos are louder than my seagate *shrug* You might wana return that bad boy, it might crap on ya!
 
Hey, I have that same problem! My 80gb 7200.7 is almost as noisy as my X15 36LP when accessing data. I was very surprised... I ran the Seagate SeaTools diagnostic tool and it did not detect any problem. My brother in law also have that exact same drive (and firmware) and it is much quieter. Not dead silent but definately quieter. I found my Barracuda to be not that much responsive. I have seen better from ATA drives. Anyway, I cannot return it saying to Seagate "heck, your drive is noisy, I want a new one..". I don't know why there is such difference :confused:

I'm in the same boat as you. I got a sata 160gb drive with my new pc. In my previous rig I have an intel 845 chipset and their intel app acceleration had a setting for accoustic level like max preformance or quiet. The new intel app acceleration raid addition just lists info no setting to change :rolleyes:

Oh I assume by noise you mean rattle like mine is making?
 
On my 120 gb SATA 7200.7 from Seagate there are a lot of clicks when it accesses, but just spinning for me is near silent.
 
I can't hear my Seagate IDE 120gig drive at all. My 40gig. Maxtor has clicked and rattled since it was new, but it works like a charm. I believe that noise, in and of itself, isn't necessarily an indicator of failure. Most new Seagates tend to be damned near silent, however, so it may be cause for some concern.
