I built the system in my sig last week and am very happy with it except the noise it makes. I think the stock P4 HS is the culprit because it gets louder under CPU load. The BIOS reports the HSF close to 5000 RPM after a good workout. I am considering getting the Zalman 7000 Cu but am concerned about the weight being so far out of Intel specs. Has anyone had any "accidents" because of the extra heft of the Zalman?
 
No, it is not even a problem with AMD, and they have stricter weight restrictions. People buy this stuff, people sell this stuff, it must be safe for you as well.
 
i have an athlon running the zalman, nice and quiet:) you can hear the drives spinning (not too hard though) not even a shim, doesn't really need it as long as you don't move the computer much. you should check to make sure it's still on right after you do move it though, i had the fan fall off of my alpha once. (saw it, put it back on, worked fine)
 
It shouldnt be a problem, just as long as you don't start jumping on your case or push it down a flight of stairs.

Make sure you use some good quality thermal paste like the artic silver 5. Also follow the mounting instructions from Zalman so the clamps hold down the heatsink properly.
