Lost my Borg. Replace or wait?

I lost my borged PC this weekend when my brother picked up his PC. I hope to get it back in a couple of months when I install a small network for him and get it folding again.

If Socket 939 motherboards are possibly going to be delayed, should I go ahead and replace it now with another XP system or is the expected price of Socket 939 close enough to XP pricing ($100 total) that I should wait and go with the new stuff?

I know I will possibly need to invest in a new PCX video card if the motherboards go PCX only at 939 introduction.

I have no insider knowledge, but when they do start coming out I seriously doubt you will be seeing any 939's even remotely close to XP prices. There is also no way they could go all PCIX that soon, there aren't even any cards on the market yet, and likely wont be for a couple months.

My prediction (based on what I've seen in the past). 939 will come out with new top end chips that cost way too much. The low end chips for the 939 platform wont come out for a couple months after that, so they can milk the high prices for a bit. The majority of the initial boards will actually be AGP boards, with a few boards that sport both. They probably wont start doing the real PCIX push till Christmas time.

Again, no information, this is just generalistic based upon similarities with the past.

Don't wait. If you wait then you won't have the enjoyment of purchasing now AND later. :D Buy! Buy! Buy!

Little Kenny's like a mad stock broker today. :)

As far as Athlon XP vs. a socket 939 system, I'd put them into two different categories altogether. The Athlon XP will continue to be the budget, bang for the buck folder, while the Athlon64 systems will be the slightly better performers with a higher price. Remember that you can still get almost an entire Athlon XP folding system for the same cash as an Athlon64 by itself.

What he ^^^ said. If you're only going to fold with it anyway then you don't really need to invest in a top of the line board and chip. XP's still have a decent life ahead of them as folders.

Now Buy! Buy! Buy! ;)

If you are going to use it for a business and can fully deduct it get the higher end system. If your scotch taping bare boards together get the least expensive you are comfortable with.

For example I put value on my time, plus the cost of returning things so I'm more inclined to spend a few extra buck on the board from a reliable place like Newegg. But I can't afford an 8 way Xeon system :(

Thanks for the replies.

The reactions were what I was thinking, I just needed to have my head smacked around a little for thinking Socket 939.

I will start watching Newegg for refurbs and pick up a new MB and XP in the next week or two.

Ahhhhhh, now doesn't that feel better. :)

By the way,

after posting buy, buy, buy so much in this thread I have since wandered over to Newegg and bought, bought, bought. :D

Oops. <shrug>

Be a responsible Republican like George dubya and BUY BUY BUY BUY! It's just too bad you'll have to charge it all due to being out of work because your job just got shipped overseas and the only job you can get is to be the Wal-Mart greeter....buy, hey, we're all part of the global economy, right? And that's good, right? If that's true, then how come my personal economy stinks?

It kinda depends on your situtation. I currently have a small setup of one XP 1900, and 2 other rigs with Xp2700s in them. My main system that I game on and do everything pretty much is also an Xp2700. My plan is to get one more XP 2700 dedicated folder very soon. (total of 5 boxes folding here at home). I OC the XPs to 2.332 ghz or even higher if they will cooperate.

When the 939s come out, I will wait a bit for the price to come down somewhat, then do a complete system upgrade. That way I'll reap the benefits of the new 939s, a bette vid card, etc. The old main system goes into the basement with the other systems, the XP 1900 gets retired, and I still have 5 systems folding.

The folding will show a moderate increase in efficiency, and my gaming will show a whopping gain, so it's a win-win if I wait.

I want it now to since I was up to about 8Ghz on 4 machines and had a good trend going. With dropping a 2Ghz machine to my brother I hate the way my numbers dropped.

I guess I have to decide if Socket 939 is going to be to high for a while and go Socket A or wait. I need to spend a little over a hundred for a CPU, MB (refurb), and a Heatsink/Fan. I have some extra SDRAM that I can use if I get a board that will handle it. I was hoping to get another MSI K7N2-Delta L that will OC to 200Mhz fairly easily and I was hoping to push another 1800+ to 2+Ghz like my brothers CPU was doing.

Choices, choices, choices.

I like the easy decisions that are no brainers. Like the ones I get to make at work occassionaly.

Don't forget the mid level soultions either. I just got an AMD 64 3200, a gig O Corsair ram (not the xms) and the big MSI mobo for less then I paid for an Intel 2.4 (@3.2), a gig O off the shelf ram and the asus 875 mobo combo less then a year ago. I already had the case psu and vid card, I'm using a standard ATA WD drive.

Totally smoked the Intel system in every way, except it's not hyper threaded. It is however my new main box.

No idea how long the legs will be on the 754, but for now it's a good buy for a main system you fold on.

Just my thoughts at the moment:D

With out a doubt, get you another folding box for sure;)

Buy, Buy, Buy.

OK, done deal. I ordered a refurbed MSI K7N2-L Delta, XP 1800+, and heatsink.

I will install this in my son's PC replacing a 266A based board with a locked 1800+ palomino in it and give him the K7N2 and hopefully unlocked 1800+ TBred. The 266a goes to the basement and folds for the rest of it's life or gets sent to college in 2005 with my daughter.

Now to get the points back up.

Hurry up FedEx.

OK. New Boxen is up and Folding. Refurbed MSI K7N2 Delta-L, XP 1800+ OC'ed to 2Ghz to start.

How's that Little Kenny?

Total again: 7.7Ghz on 4 machines

2 gig is a great place to start, nice and comfortable:D
