Just got a 27" 1440p 144hz gsync monitor and debating on replacing my powercolor r9 290x for an nvidia card to make use of the gync. Looking for a recommendation on an Nvidia equivalent. Never used an nvidia card so not sure where to start

A new 970 or used 980 would be equivalent. But for modern games neither will do ultra settings at a consistent 60 FPS or 144 FPS at high / sometimes medium. For that you're going to need a 980 ti. Even then, pushing that resolution and FPS is a challenge.

Right now I have a 980 Ti and Acer XB270HU (1440p 144hz GSYNC) - same deal. Maybe the 2nd generation of Pascal will do 144 FPS Ultra at 1440p for AAA titles. Maybe.

It sure is a nice monitor though!

A GTX 970 would be the equivalent, but as Kwaz said you're going to want a 980 Ti. With a TItan X, which is only 4-7% faster, I can push around 60-90 FPS in most recent games with nearly all eye candy turned on at 2560x1440. In my experience 80-100 FPS seems to be the sweet spot on my PG278Q with G-Sync on.

Ouch the 980 Ti prices are more then i paid for the monitor. Thanks something to definitely think about.

How does the 390x compare to the 980 ti? I could sell/trade my dell S2716DG (its still BNIB) and get something like a asus MG279Q along with a 390x for a lot cheaper then going the 980 ti route.

Well the nice thing about G-Sync is that it actually helps with the FPS drops that running games at 1440p/144hz will create. Depending on what games you play, you might not even need a 980 Ti.

I would look a used 980 or 970 to hold you over until Pascall comes out. You can easily find a used 970 for around $250 or less. Check your local Craigslist. Bookmark a few searches and check them frequently. You'll usually find a better deal local than online.

R9 290x and a GTX 980 are equivalent. A R9 290 and a GTX 970 are equivalent. A regular 980 is fine for 1440p although a 980ti would be faster. You can get a GTX 970 and game fine at 1440p, but many of the newer titles will require that you turn down the graphics a level.

970 is way too weak to cut it for 1440p, because that 3.5GB actually will be an issue in certain games at that resolution. Even a 980 won't be that great, so you're really just looking at the 980 Ti for 1440p.

(this is assuming you want to run games ultra @ 60FPS. If you don't might turning down settings or you're ok with lower frames then the 980 would make do)

How does the 390x compare to the 980 ti? I could sell/trade my dell S2716DG (its still BNIB) and get something like a asus MG279Q along with a 390x for a lot cheaper then going the 980 ti route.

Stock vs stock about 80% of 980 Ti's performance at 1440p. But OC vs OC probably only around 65%.

Thanks for the great info. Really giving me something to think about, doing some quick math looks like if i went the 980 route it would come out around $200 more for new cards with a 980 then if i sold my Gsync monitor and got a Freesync one with a 390x..looks like its time to shop around for used cards and see what i can find.

You bet!

Where you'd come out 6 and 12 months from now is anyone's guess. There are a lot of factors; DX12 / Vulcan, GSYNC / Freesync, the latest in AA mumbo jumbo.

Take some time thinking about it. Research as you're doing. You're spending a lot of money - - more than the lot of people spend on a rig alone. Well, not here. But you get my point.

Pick a camp and stick with it, otherwise it's going to cost ya. What you're losing on the monitor could get you a better card. The only saving grace is that Freesync is cheaper.

If you have the money, try it out. Pick a store where you can return things and see what you like.

Depends what quality you can accept.
If you spend a lot of time gaming then a 980ti would be the best investment.
Of all your hobbies, for time spent using, it is probably one of the cheapest if not the cheapest.

I'm at 1080p and wouldnt want less than a 980ti. Some games need more GPU power than that to maintain 60fps!
And if you intend on trying VR you need to maintain 90fps at a res 1/2 way between 1080p and 1440p.

Ok its no big deal but if you are looking for specific Nvidia help, why not ask in the Nvidia sub-forum?

I wasn't 100% sure i wanted to go Nvidia route and was debating on a 390x so figured the general area was best. Its still kind of a toss up. All said and done will cost me about $100 more to get a 980 ti with 1440p gsync TN monitor VS 390x 1440p freesync IPS monitor. I'm really stuck which way i should go

IPS looks a helluva lot better than TN. I'm doing IPS on my next build. But you already own the GSYNC. Can you recoup your costs? Also a R9 290X and R9 390X are the same cards. You can even CrossfireX them although the system will effectively see them as 4GB cards 4+4 instead of 4 + 8 from what I understand.

New cards are being announced in June and probably released just in time for the college kids to pick out new PCs. Your 290X should hold you over unless you're trying to run a few games like Tomb Raider maxed out.

It would cost me about double what i paid for the gsync monitor to get an IPS. I got a heck of a deal on the monitor.

If i went Gsync IPS would cost me closer to $350 more with 980 ti then a 390x with IPS Freesync.

Well you can just use the 290X until Nvidia releases new cards. The GTX 980 will not be an upgrade for you. Spending that type of money and not getting better frame rates would tick me off. The 980ti is the upgrade card for you if staying with GSYNC.

Also you see why it's asinine for companies to make proprietary technology in the PC space. Imagine that you could only run Intel processors on certain blockbuster games. Then when you wanted to play another game you now have to build an AMD system. Then to play another game you need to build a Nvidia Tegra system. But the technology is really good in those monitors. Very, very, good. It's a shame that GSYNC is proprietary. FreeSync was adopted by Intel sometime ago. I don't run Intel GPU so no idea if they are doing something with it yet.

Yeah i hear ya, its been a pain. But I got such a good deal on the monitor i couldnt pass it up. I really just bought it because of 1440p and 144hz 27" for the price. For the price aside I just cant really find any good benchmarks on a 980ti vs 390x in 1440p. Nvidia is about $150-300 more depending if i go TN or IPS panel and not sure if the 6GB vs 8GB makes a difference. Its really hard for me not to stick with AMD to save money and get 8GB card but ive never ran Nvidia so not sure how they overclock etc.

Oh you like to OC? The 980ti cards are monster overclockers. The 290x you have will also if you do like I did and put a water cooler on it from Corsair. See the Corsair unit in my sig? If your card is a reference card it should fit and costs like $30.

Corsair Hydro Series HG10 A1 Edition GPU Cooling Bracket

Corsair H80i GT.

The H80i is a AIO water cooler from Corsair that you add to the HG10 A1 bracket. You can get a smaller AIO water cooler though.

I was looking at a EVGA gtx 980ti SC GAMING card. Still researching which of the different brands are good or to stay away from

All are pretty much the same, unless you get one that has a water cooling solution from the factory.

I would just get a reference card and OC it. Well the MSI Lightning series is a great series of GPUs. Let me see if MSI has a 980ti Lightning.

Anyone recommend any other highly reputable places like HD for buying used video card? There's not much of a selection at the moment :(
