Ok basically I am looking at getting into picture taking. I have always wanted to start tinkering with it as a hobby but never really went thru with it. Lately I have come across so many things and tell myself man I wish I had a camera to snap a shot at that.

If anyone could tell me of some decent camera's to look at for someone that is just now starting to get into picture taking or what to look for in a camera I would greatly appreciate it. My price range would be around 3 - 400 dollars maybe a bit more if it is really worth it.

I do know I want something where I can take some really close up pictures. Such as a beed on a flower etc... As well as being able to zoom in on something from a distance and get good shots. Right now I have an old Kodak DX4330 but I am not happy with it and it honestly is starting to show its age.

Thank you for any advice in advance that you may give me it is very much appreciated.

if you want to play with photography as a hobby then i would get an entry level SLR camera.. You will have several lens choices and if you decide to continue you can still use the lenses on your newer camera, provided you stay with the same manufacturer (Nikon, Canon, Pentax, Olympus etc) Id start with either a D40 or D40x from nikon or a Canon xt or xti. I personally went with the nikon D80 since it has more features that i wanted and gives me the ability to grow as a photographer.

With $300 to $400 you can get a Canon Powershot S3 or S5. Now, they are great cameras but they have their limitations. More noise at a higher ISO. 200+. Low light indoor setting you will have a hard time getting a good, sharp, and clear pictures. I can bet you that within 6 months, you would have explored all the features on those cameras. Because they are not DSLR, you are pretty much stuck with the camera limitations. So, try to save another couple of hundred dollars if you can and get a entry level DSLR. Nikon D40, Rebel XTi, and Pentax K100. I have my Powershot S3 for less than 6 months and yesterday I just picked a Rebel XTi and a 28mm to 135mm USM IS zoom lense. Is a marco shot I took yesterday:

I don't even need to crop the shot and to resize it to make it more presentable.

Thanks for the replies folks I appreciate it. ALthough I would love to get a DSLR Camera I am looking for more something that I can carry around with me all the time for those spur of the moment pictures. I am sure eventually I will get a DSLR Camera for those special pictures that I will be taking.

I was looking at this Camera though any thoughts on it http://www.adorama.com/ICAA650.html?sid=11924129391621442

I had that one for 2 weeks until I exchanged it because there was a speck inside the lens. Then I switched to the S3. The A650 is not bad. Because the sensor isn't any bigger and with a higher MP, it tends to have more noise at a higher iso. For that kind of money, you can get a much better "dslr like" camera like the S5.

I use B&H for lenses and slr bodies. For P&S camera's, Newegg offers them for good prices too...
