Up until 3 weeks ago, I was running WHS 2011 with DriveBender providing a single (duplicated) volume. The volume contained all of the Server Folder (Client Computer Backups, photos, movies, user documents, etc.). However, a few weeks ago the DB service failed to start and my volume was inaccessible. The folks at DriveBender are trying to fix the issue, but until then, I'm without the use of my media and client backup functions. I'm trying to come up with a plan to migrate from Drive Bender to something different (and better?).

Hardware includes:
ASUS P5Q Pro mobo w/ Q9300 CPU, 6GB RAM
Intel 335 SSD 240GB main drive
1.5TB WD Black (formerly part of the drive bender pool, 16% free)
3TB WD Red (formerly part of the drive bender pool, 16% free)
3TB WD Red (formerly part of the drive bender pool, 16% free)
0.5TB WD Black (formerly part of the drive bender pool, 16% free)
2TB WD Red (external backup for WHS 2011 only)

Any solutions should have some form of duplication to account for the loss of a drive. I use CrashPlan for offsite backup.

I'm out of SATA ports, and I'd really like to add an optical drive to this machine, so I think that a SATA card is needed. Additionally, the Black drives are generating a bunch of heat that cause constant SMART warnings.

I'd like to keep costs down, if possible. I've thought about using Windows Server 2012 Essentials, but the cost is a bit steep, but Storage Spaces might work for my duplication needs and also gives me the ability to backup my 3TB drives (because WHS 2011 is limited to 2TB drives).

Suggestions?
 
I use https://stablebit.com/ DrivePool. Never had a single problem. I have had drives die, but never lost data. And I like that I can chose which folder I want redundancy on vs having to do everything. The beautiful part is you can use any version of windows you want including Windows 7/8/8.1 or Server. Makes it very flexible.
 
I second drivepool. Best program for pooling drives. I tried drive bender, but it tries to do too much and usually made a mess of things.

I went back to drivepool and I love it.
