Guys Im just trying to see if one exists. I already have a file server with 3 250 and 1 200 all PATA no taid all running off the mobo. I think I need to get some safety here for my data. I actually just got another 400Gig PATA Seagate.

The mobo is an Epox mobo Socket A and is running a Sempron 2400+ proc. Right now the computer is having some sort of problems for a year already where I find it radnomly reboots and gets stuck at the verifying DMA Data screen and I have to reset the cmos every time. I changed, the memory, mobo, and the PSU already still to have the same problem. Maybe a bad IDE cable or hard drive? Although all show they are healthy. Ive had this problem for a while now and it is still occuring. My next plan is to disconnec tall the drives and just run the new Seagate 400gig PATA drive I bought and see what happens. Anway...


Is there any PCI raid 5 cards out there? Im thinking in a month or so finding the probem and actually using it as a reliable server. Im looking for IDE only since I do not want to upgrade the mobo, ram, and proc again (I did this all already while trying to figure out the problem with no success).
I would want to be able to expand the array without rebuilding it I think its called online expansion. Lokking to spend as little as possible but I want it to be very reliable. Also there is no way I would be able to use the current PATA drives that I have now with the RAID 5 card right?
 
Highpoint is an excellent value RAID card. Not the fastest in the world but reviews are always good, driver support is excellent across OSs.

It will have no problem saturating a 100BT connection.
 
RAID doesn't protect data, it protects uptime. Admittedly, uptime is of value in this situation, and probably worth the investment in some redundancy, but your data is vulnerable to a wide variety of hazards other than physical disks failure even if you have RAID.
 
im thining RAID 5. Wouldnt that protect some of my data should a drive fail? Im looking at spending around $200 for a card and also plan to put a gigabit ehternet card some I need something that will keep up.

Also will I be able to use the 400gig PATA I just bought in my array?
 
RAID5 protects ALL of your data from one drive failing, but it offers no other protection.

I lost a 1.6TB RAID array and no drives failed ^^

Your data can still be lost if:
The data is corrupted
The data is deleted
Something happens to the partition
Multiple drives fail
etc.

and as the next guy pointed out:
Lightning, Flooding, Volcanoes, etc. will also kill your data.
 
Anything that is critical to you really needs a second copy. Do you have baby pictures of the kids that would be terrible to lose? Tax returns? Bank documents? Those you might want to make a second copy of besides your RAID-5 array. You wouldn't want to lose everything if your house got hit by lightning. Buy a couple of 500Gb USB drives and back important things up to them once a month.
