Hey guys!

Im looking for advice, and what better place to look than here?

I currently run desktop hardware, i3 cpu, 16G memory and simply Windows 2012 R2 installed on it with all of my services.

I would really like to upgrade this and go the VMWare route, or are server core with hyper-v installed as i can get Windows licenses for free through work.

I just can't make up my mind on what hardware i should get? I have thought about an avoton build with 32G ram, but im not sure if it's fast/effecient enough.

I don't have that high demand, i plan on running a few linux VMs for webhosting/testing, a Windows VM for a remote access to my "desktop", freenas or something similar for my storage (need something that can handle passthrough of drives) and a pfsense installation for routing.

Not really that demanding imo, however im not sure what the best route would be.

I don't have that high budget for this, i could go upto around 1000 euros and i prefer to shop hardware within europe as the import taxes in my country are quite extreme.

Can someone help me out here?
 
For a start into a home lab there are far cheaper/faster options unless power consumption is the primary concern. I would suggest going with something that has an e3 over an avoton. At idle the power consumption will be about the same but the e3 has a potential higher maximum performance if you end up needing it.

If you can hold off for a bit, the Skylake E3-12xx v5 processors should be coming out in the near future. They will support 64GB of ram vs the 32 the current ones do. Otherwise I would look for a E3-1230 v3 or higher chip, a supermicro motherboard and 32GB of ECC ram. That will give you a solid base to start for a decent price.
 
I can definately hold out a bit, especially if we are looking at the option for more RAM.

I have thought about the E3 setup, but couldn't really decide, something like the TS440, while quite nice it doesn't really cover my needs as the filestorage im running is currently 11 drives, and i need something that can hold this and maybe more in the future, i already have the chassis etc for it so only really need, motherboard, cpu, ram and perhaps a new powersupply, maybe also a new controller but im just going for an M1015 if i should do need more slots.

Power consumption is a concern indeed, but the server will be idle 99% of the time, or at least close to idle..
