I'm currently using HD 595s that I got from a nice person from here, and they're great but I miss my Pro 900s

I just got my Xonar STX and I can tell a difference in sound quality but I miss feeling the 900s gave me while listen to electronic music :D

What are some similar phones?
 
The Pro 900s are somewhat of an outlier, I had them and I should know. They have a razor sharp V-style EQ that has extremely clean and clear highs but skull-rattling lows that don't bleed at all. Really I don't know that there is another headphone similar to them that isn't the HFI-780 and you can think of it as the same thing just... sloppier.

If you just want the lows emphasized then I would recommend a set of Beyerdynamic DT 770s, Denon D2000/D5000 or Darth Beyers even.
 
I guess I can grab another pair of 900s how close would you say the DT 770s are to them?
I think I have a big head because I noticed the top of my head would get sore after extended listening sessions with the 900s

My 595s are extremely comfortable I would say almost as comfy as the Siberia V2s

Go for Darth Beyers V3 or V4 Terminators or the D5000. The Darths are about as fun as a dynamic headphone gets.
 
I guess what I'm saying is the 900s we're not great in the comfortably area but I loved how the bass could kick you in the chest.
 
Well, the DT 770s are comfy as hell and have a very light clamp if you get the premiums, as opposed to the Pro, and they have an extremely emphasized mid-bass but they won't go quite as deep as the Pro 900s. In addition, the Pro 900s have a VERY clear and detailed response that the DT 770s just won't be able to match but for electronic music and other similar things you shouldn't care too much.

The Denon D2000/D5000 on the other hand will have significantly clearer mids/highs and get the sub-bass that the Beyers will lack but they're still overall a more balanced headphone.
 
The Darth are very different than the 770s. I would say the D5000 is more on the Darths level. I had some Deep Open Darths a while back that may have been the best dynamic gaming headphones I have yet owned. Only Stax had a deeper soundstage but the Deeps had the biggest, most realistic feeling sound stage I have had. A rare beast though. I doubt you could score one.
 
I've been reading about the HD 650s and they seem solid but as with all open phones I assume the bass is lacking which isn't a bad thing but most electronic music is bass heavy.
The Darths look pretty funny honestly but I can stand any design if it means results.

The 650s have a lot of bass actually. Just that it is a bit slow without serious power. You need a strong amp for that one. Google Sennheiser veil and you will understand.

Anyway, yeah, if it was me I would go Darths, D5000 or maybe a HE400.

Interesting would assume the STX can drive the 650s well enough, I'll look at the HE400

It could. Actually, I think it is a really good headphone still. The HE400 will run fine out of the STX as it can play ok out of a sansa clip. A 650 would not do well with a portable player lol.

Anyway, I know the D5000 or the HE400 will make you VERY happy. Those are the two best I can think of in this price range that will run great on an STX.

A pair of Beyer 880 250ohm would be another good one for a bit less.
 
Thanks man I'll keep my eyes out for some good deals on them, have you tried the 650s before?
I don't have any music shops around me with nice phones so I will have to bite and hope I enjoy whatever I grab.
 
I had 650s 600s 580s 595s 555s. Liked the 600s too. The 650 veil is not as thick as it used to be btw. I would still go d5000>he400>beyer 880 or darth>650
 
The 650s no longer have the veil or the heavy bass leaning. You need to specifically look for an older set with the black drivers (?) I believe. If you get a new, or recent, pair they will be a fairly analytical headphone that sounds nothing like what most people describe the 650 to be.
 
I would likely be looking at used anyway to save money and have them already broke in.
 
I'll also give a tip to the D5000's. I used to use the DT770 Pro, and once broken in, their bass response was outstanding, but overpowering, hence the D7000 I own. But if your a bass head, you really can't go wrong.

A buddy had the D5000, and be honest, they are really good cans, especially if you Markl mod them. I'd recommend running an external amp, but to each their own.

With regards to getting a used set, check out the "For Sale" section over at headfi.org. You'd have great odds at getting a set that are broken in and taken care of.
