Looking for LCD advice

I am looking to upgrade from my Samsung 17" CRT to an LCD. I have been looking at the Dell E228WFP and the Dell 2007FPW. The thing that concerns me is that I am running an eVGA 6600 GT (AGP). Is that going to be able to push a panel of that size?

Please keep in mind that I know absolutely NOTHING about LCDs so any hand holding here would be appreciated! :p

well there's a lot to learn.

I don't care for Dell panels at all personally. If you want decent and cheap there's better like Acer, BenQ, Viewsonic etc.

As far as res most new LCDs scale down quite well. I have a 24" Acer the does amazing work not stretching the image even at 800x600 which is crazy considering the native res is 1920x1200.

Is there something wrong in particular with the Dells? I was leaning that way (ignorantly, I know) due to the sheer number of people that seem to have them here. Thanks for the other options as well, I don't really like trying to make a purchase like this with no knowledge of the technology.

As someone who owns two Dells, I think that's total rubbish. Just my two cents.

Anyway, LCD screens by design always look best at native resolution. Scaling algorithms help them to look okay at non-native resolutions, but you'll always be able to tell (exception: unless you are running at a resolution exactly half of native resolution, example, 1280x800 on a 2560x1600 screen). Of course, there's always the option of running in 1:1 mode and running at a lower res, but then games will look small :p

The E228 is a 22" panel and thus uses a TN panel. ALL 22 inch LCDs are TN panels. TN panels have fast response times but poor color accuracy and viewing angles (that is a nice way of telling you to probably steer clear in most cases). The 2007WFP ships with one of two panel types; S-IPS (generally regarded as the best) or S-PVA (considered somewhere between the two). it's a tossup as to which one you receive.

Tell us a little more about what you're using your screen for and what your budget is.

In a word WoW (if that really is a word), I also play the odd game of Half-Life 2 and Doom 3. Other than that it is casual surfing. I don't think that viewing angles will really be a problem for me since I will be sitting straight on, I will have to take note of my habits to see if that will be an issue.

As far as money, I have to stick to $400 (including shipping). I am able to get the 2007FPW from Sam's for $359 shipped and if there is anything wrong I can take it back to the store. My wife works for Wal-Mart so that makes it a huge convenience for me. She is adamant about no more than $400 and I really, really want don't want to loose sex over a monitor! :D

Hello,

I received my E228WFP and I can say that i like it. It arrived here with no dead pixels or anything the only thing is the back light but i have been using a E171FP for 4 years and i never knew about it until a few days ago when i came here and started reading out.

The colors to me seem accurate unless there's something wrong with my eyes :D

The only thing that i would like to is use the drivers that came with the monitor and not vista's drivers.
