Canadian resident (Montreal) looking for a pre-built HP, Acer, Dell or other with the following specs :

- i7 920
- 1TB HD (either 1 x 1TB or 2 x 500GB)
- At least 8GB ram
- No overclocking planned (naturally)
- Windows 7 (64b)

I can go either way on the blu-ray player.

What do you recommend as a model, and where do you recommend I get it?

Thanks!

Just goto www.dell.com or whatever and pick out those specs. Really nothing to it. Not sure why you are asking on recommendations. Now if you are looking for specific motherboards, they all provide you with OEM motherboards from big manufacturers, so its pointless.

Why dont you want to build one?

Because the guy sitting next to you might've done exactly that with his last pre-built, and found the Dell pre-builts lacking, faulty, or not as advertised. Maybe the Acer Aspire line is generally better. Maybe among the Acer Aspire line, there's a specific model to avoid that's known to have issues, that doesn't apply to the other models.

Last year at this time, there was a particular Acer Aspire Q9300 model that was advertised as shipping with Vista 64 installed. Which it did. However, the CDs that came with it were Vista 32. There were numerous complaints on message boards about how people all, individually, one after the other, had to call Acer and specifically request the Vista 64 cds be sent to them after the hardware had arrived. Some succeeded in obtaining them. Most didn't. The other models Acer offered did not have this problem.

So yeah, I didn't think it was particularly pointless of me to ask first. It's free and someone might've had to re-assuring words for me about a company or model.

As for building my own... I've never built my own system that didn't require me returning at least one part that wouldn't play well with the others. The pre-builts don't seem to suffer from this problem. They may not be perfect, but the components at least play well with each other.

If you have an idea of the parts you want, try www.avadirect.com .

They allow a lot of customization and are sometimes cheaper than dell or anything else. I am fairly sure they ship to Canada as well. They offer low end up to the very high end. They built the rig in my signature.
