A friend of mine just game me an old Athlon 2500+ and MB to use as a simple file server. The problem is he has a 3rd party HSF on it that sounds like a jet engine. I'm not going to overclock the chip or do anything fancy with the machine so I'd really like to find the quietest HSF unit I can. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Dane R. Vinson

Neither the Ninja nor the Freezer64 will work with the OP's Athlon 2500. The only Athlon 2500s ever made were Socket A.

Yeah its a socket A chip.
On a side note however my main machine has a Ninja installed on a Opteron 165. That HS kicks total a$$... athough it just about didn't fit in the case.

oops...didn't notice the socket A. The SI-97A linked above with a good silent 92mm fan should work nicely though.

I had an SP-94 on my old Celeron 2.4GHz and it did a pretty good job at cooling it with a quiet Panaflo fan. It should do nicely.

If you read the original post, he says Socket A.

I know, but the SP-97 is the same as the SP-94, aside from a different mounting system.

That HS will keep my 3200+ at 50c max load with a 1600rpm 92mm, so you could easily put that fan at 5v and be fine.
