looking for a HD cooling solution.

So I have a raptor on the way and I know it runs a touch warm. I'd love to do something to cool it but I have a very beautiful Lian Li PC-71 and I just can't see myself ever being happy with those crappy plastic grills that come with most of those HD coolers that suck air in from the front, but I DO want a 5.25" cooling unit.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Zalman has that one expensive passive cooling one, but does it work at all? Otherwise I might just get one of these:

Also - I might get a pair of raptors, does anyone know of any air-coolers that will do two drives at once?

Wy not just put them in the HD bays and get an intake fan? Panaflo L1A 80mm would probably do ya fine, and keep them cool. Cheaper too...

EDIT: Wait, your case comes with 2 intake fans that blow over your hard drives... how is that not enough cooling?

Thats what I thought.
Just put them in the bottom drive cage and switch the front fans on.
They are even speed controled already.

Why don't you try moving one of the other drives up, and putting the raptor down int he bottom? Move up one of the non-critical ones? What are your HDD temps anyways?

well, there is always modding the PC-71 baycover
and setting the unit further back in the case

a nice perforated metal drill pattern or fancier slot milling job
would look quite nice especially if you had more than one bay with it
of course a drill press and or milling machine would be required
and considering the number of holes or mill slots involved
raises the risks of screwing up one of them
but a pro doing it by hand or with CAD\CAM could make it look real nice
especially if they are backlit

er, it's a PC-70 actually, so it's the silver one I need. But it's still not the aluminum finish. The new revision of the PC-71 comes with baycovers that do a really good job of blending in/stealthing all the drives (floppy included). It just looks so nice.

It might work out to drill one of them actually, it could end up looking nice if I do it carefully.

just an FYI

YOU DONT NEED HDD COOLING.....i have a server running my old set of 4 30 gig drives in raid 0 config... there ina case with no intake and the only exaust if the damm PSU... they have been runnign for over a year now.

My friends jerry has no cooling on his raptor 10,000rpm drive....hes had it running since raptors came out...

unless you have SCSI then why bother with it....then you dont have to worry about messin the front of you PC70 up...

if you must...here is a cooling idea... install the HDDs on the bottom cage, and put thermal grease on the sides of the drives so the cage makes good thermal contact with the drives...this will act as a small heatsink. Then titen the down with the install screws...turn on your front fans to cool the circut boards and cage and you set... that all i did with my SCSI drive there...
