I'm building two computers. One for me and one for my grandfather. Here again comes the monotonous question, which drive to get? I want a speedy drive, reliable & somewhat quiet.

The choices are as follows:

Western Digital 80gb 7200rpm 8mb cache
Maxtor 80gb 7200rpm 8mb cache

I've had really good experience with western digital drives. I have a 3 1/2+ year old 20gb western digital on 24/7 thats still kicking. I also had a 1.2gb western digital that never gave me trouble. I've never had a maxtor drive but from what I've been hearing they aren't great in the reliability department. Any input would be appreciated :D

Ugh not again. Here comes all the WD fanboys that say "well I had a Maxtor and it crapped out after X months so therefore all Maxtor drives are terrible."

HD failure rates at very low. Some people like WD and some like Maxtor. I have .... counting now.... nine Maxtor drives, 2 WDs and 1 Seagate in my house right now. I had one Maxtor go bad last year and I returned it and got another. But I know that data storage is not totally safe so I always have my data backed up anyway. Just because 1 of my 9 Maxtor drives doesn't mean I won't buy from them again though.

If you want the best consumer drive on the market right now, I'd say go for the WD Raptor (that is the main rig in my system) but it sounds like you don't need that. So I say go for the best price/GB value you can get between Maxtor and WD. I'm not a big Seagate fan as my one Seagate drive is a 160GB SATA drive and it is slower than my Maxtor ATA133 drives.

I wouldnt call my self a "fanboy" of any particular HDD
in fact who you buy from I feel is more important than what you buy
Which Brand of Hard Drive is Most Reliable? @ SR FAQ

however, the WD 80GB series where very robust HDDs
same basic model as the 12 WD400BBs I have all of which are working fine
and are past their 3 year warranty
(and no 12 doesnt make me a fanboy I have over 40 Seagates :p )

just get a good supplier and shipping chain
and take care of the drive once you get it
Proper Handling Guide @ Seagate

Sorry, I meant what are the two drives strong and weak points? I'm just wondering which drive would be quiet but still fast and reliable. I'm not sure which brand (i.e seagate, wd, maxtor) would fulfill these requirements. These drives would probobly be in use for 4+ years. :)

I understand that all brands of drives are good and I'm not biased at all. I'm open for suggestions :)
