We have an 802.11g network, and my mom's laptop has given me nothing but trouble. I got an internal wireless card that runs on a miniPCI slot, and for the most part it works. However, when I place her laptop on her desk in the kitchen, strange things happen. It says she is connected with a "very good" signal strength, but it doesn't work. When I go into the connection properties, there is a very strage padlock next to the connection. Maybe a picture would help:

Whenever that lock is there, the connection doesn't work. If i disconner and reconnect to the network, the lock will go away and the connection will work again. A few minutes later, the lock appears and the connection dies. What is going on?

That symbol means the firewall is enabled. If the firewall is killing your internet (it shouldn't), then just go into the properties of the connection, and disable the firewall.
