Linux RAID5, reliability & flexibility

I've currently got a RAID5 array of four drives running on a hardware RAID card, but I am planning to move to a linux solution running in software. While I've grown accustomed to the speed of the card, the speed of the array in SW Linux isn't a big issue for me. However, I have a couple questions for anyone that uses Linux in SW for a RAID5:

  • I've been told that at more than 5 or 6 drives, the array becomes unreliable. Is there truth to this claim?
  • Is it possible to expand the array by adding another drive without having to back up/rebuild it?
  • Performance is not really an issue, but how slow or speedy can I expect it to be? Will writes become slower and slower as more drives are added?

Thanks
