Given that I have seen people say that they prefer Nvidia cards because of their superiority under Linux, I couldn't help but wonder, "How many people does this actually affect?" See, for as many people as would throw that statement around, I suspected that very few of them actually do use Linux, and the "problem" isn't that much of an issue at all.

RULES:
Do not vote for the second option if you think that Linux compatability would be "nice to have". Do not vote for the second option if you do not use your video card in a manner that stresses it (if you do not game in Linux, or run demanding graphics software, etc. then the need for high performance drivers is not necessary). This should be obvious, but if you do use Linux for gaming and simply do not care about the performance, then do not vote for the second option. If you use Linux but have an ATI card, but still wish for better performance, please do not vote for the second option because it would go against the vote you made with your wallet. Also, if you went with an Nvidia card solely for the price (and performance didn't matter) do not vote for the second option. Only vote for the second option if you use Linux in a demanding manner, experience crashes due specifically to the video card drivers, have been unable to move to Linux because video card driver support prohibits it, or are using an Nvidia card in Linux primarily because of Nvidia's superior driver support. I think that if these rules are followed, a more accurate portrait of the importance of quality Linux drivers can be painted.

Feel free to chime in if you think the rules should be modified or any other guidelines need to be added.

Also, and I really wish this could go without saying, but please keep this civil. I'll make it known right now that I prefer ATI, I am not trying to hide it, but I believe that the rules I set should allow for a fair poll.

I voted YES. I use Linux for a variety of things so it's important to me that everything works well with it. Even if my current main video card is not using Linux, there is a good chance that it later will when I upgrade.

Not really, an amazingly low number of people use Linux. In fact, the few times I've even been curious, after getting it set up I was kinda thinking this: Wow, this is totally freaking pointless, offers nothing more than Windows ever did for me and its been hader to install, maintain, and even do things with, so I guess I'll just go back to Windows, where everything I wan to work actually works, and to where I dont actually have to put that much effort into making things work for less benefit.

Overall conclusion with Linux: A big waste of time to learn a lot about it......

Anyway, when I was using it I never really seemed to have a benefit with a driver or not. It all worked "out of the box" (or ISO in this case) for me. And since I couldnt really game on Linux, I didnt see the full point in hasaling myself with drivers.
 
pssh, I'm sorry, but you can't have a vote with rules. Voting doesn't work that way.
 
It doesn't matter to me.. Would rather spend my time useing my computer , gameing surfing, etc, than trying to figure it out.. The distros I have tried and managed to get running successfully offered little to nothing over windows while causeing me to spend way to much time trying to get program x to run.. When it worked it was nice.. But the $ I could have saved not dealing with MS did not even justify the hours I was spending to get it to work...
 
^^ You're right a few hours of your time vs. a couple hundered dollars of your hard earned cash. If it takes you more than a couple hours to setup linux then you should learn how to use google. The main thing that linux always offered me was 1) I'm not spending ANY money. 2) It ran VERY stable vs. windows random reboots and BSODs. To me that's enough to justify using linux. I still dual boot because wine and cedega don't cover enough ground (and cedega is pos) on the gaming front. Hell if valve would just make a linux steam client I would never use windows again.

Another side benefit to using linux is I don't have to hunt codecs down. MPlayer plays everything I've EVER tried to play in it. A lot of the time I watched stuff my room mate downloaded that he couldn't watch because he couldn't find the codec or the codec for windows he had made it unwatchable (like everything being different shades of green and only green). Oh well you just got my blood flowing with the linux bashing lol.
