linking two pcs

so my friend and i both got doom3 and wanted to play some deathmatch. Well we both have windows xp (pro and home) and we have a crossover cable going from ethernet port to ethernet port but after that i ALWAYS get confused as to what to do!! I have tried this over the years many many times and have only been successful once (having the computers be able to transfer files and such). Is there an easy way to set up this simple network of two PCs with a crossover cable that i am just missing? any suggestions are appreciated

right click on "my computer" go to "properties" then go to "comptuer name"

put both comptuers in the same workgroup... you can type workgroup in both.. then restart both.. it should work fine...
