BTW - I've had cold cathodes in my cases for years and have never had one catch fire or even get anywhere close. The ones that have failed on me have just not powered up. No fire, no smoke, no burning smell. I just prefer LED's for their color. You just can't get a red CCFL that's not pink.
 
those 5mm ones are 5v, so make sure you hook up to the red wire on the molex and not the yellow.

Hate to break it to you but the LED the OP linked above is 3.3V. 5V will burn it out in seconds. The voltage of a bare LED is determined by the material it's made of. This material also determines the color. Red and amber LED's are 2.0V. The brighter blue, green, and white LED's are 3.3-3.5V. If you're going to run them at some other voltage, you need a dropdown resistor in series with the LED.

I was told i could daisy chain leds togethers as long as their voltage combined was equal-ish to that of the voltage input. well i must have done it wrong i fried 4 leds. thank god for old power supplies for testing on. i think im going to go with the led strips.but i just liked the idea of doing stuff my self.
 
You can buy pre-wired "12v" LED's off of ebay for super cheap, or you could just pick up a dc to dc LED driver and not have to deal with resistors at all.

You can do that but the slightest variation in the between the LED's in series will cause different brightness'es across the string. I'd go with game14 and BlueFireIce and just buy something premade designed for computers.

Screw the individual LED's. Pick up this for 7$ shipped. 24 high brightness, wide angle green LED's in a flexible, waterproof strip.

Mount like a CCFL, it's over 3w of LED power. It will light your entire case.
