i am planning on building a new rig (my first intel build ever!) the components are the following:

asus z87 gryphon
2 8 gig mem sticks for 16 total gigs of memory
new atx case
pentium 3220

i plan on upgrading the cpu later to maybe a xeon. i want speed. will the xeon be good for this rig? how are xeon processors for gaming. Thanks!

If you're just going to be gaming, might as well go for an i5/i7.

Unless you have any other reason as to why you'd want a Xeon.

They should perform the same as similarly clocked i7s minus the overclocking and they are cheaper and support some extra virtualization features. Just make sure the mobo supports it.

There's no point in getting a LGA 1150 Xeon for gaming. They don't come with any extras like larger cache size, more cores or higher clock speed; just more expensive prices for the same or worse performance*. For other uses there may be some benefits, like going all the way down to 13W for some lower clocked models.

* there is an E-1280v3 which turbos to 4GHz on 1c, but it's a $600+ processor.
