Here's a story about a guy losing his job for installing SETI@home at the school he used to work for. How many times has it been said to not do this.
 
You always hate to hear about these instances. Although I have to ask - What could possibly cost 1 million dollars to fix? Maybe I am missing something? :confused:
 
I thought the same thing about the 1 million to fix.
Unless they are including new hardware bought to gain performance they lost while he looked for ET.
 
Removal of software, blown hardware, loss of productivity, education etc. Also, I hear that he bought hardware specifically for the purposes of running SETI@home, which may be unsuitable for use in schools.

That's just stupid. Having it run on your personal machine at work is one thing, but using school money to buy hardware to run SETI? Yikes.
 
They're saying 1.2 to 1.6 million now, which includes the new building they need for everything. Because you know, that's his fault too, and completely related to pulling BOINC off of the machines. :rolleyes:

I've seen 4 articles now about this, and every one has a completely different set of charges. It sounds to me like they're just piling on to try and justify the big check that they're asking for.
 
Here is the article that was posted a day or two ago on the front page (that i just found in my RSS) about this incident. Sounds like there were lots of other factors at play here that led to his firing. This guy seemed to be grossly abusing his buying power at the school and apparently (according to the article) been running SETI for 9 years.

Bottom line: Use common sense people. :)
 
sheesh, I run FAH at work with the states and with the schools approval. THey are on my technical machines and run in the background and do not affect my primary job. He was kinda going overkill.

I do not use school money to purchase parts or machines for folding, thats something even a child should know.

agreed with gwarren, this craps gotta be in writing half the time to CYA.

I will say this though, alot of school systems contribute folding of any time to a loss of resources, the CPU cycles could be used for other purposes related to "school needs" so alot of places drill people on this factor alone even though it makes almost no sense at all, my computers go 50% unused 100% of the time. They also contribute it to a loss of energy resources, which can actually be a true factor in this, running my systems (I run 10 here at the school, with permission) can run a bit on the ol' energy bill, but these schools pay a set amount of money per month at the same time for unlimited uses of energy, minus discounts they get for week long breaks where they shut the main switch off at the school for the week (minus the security systems seperate power junction box).

Just stupid, he got fired for other reasons, using folding though just got it in the news is all.
