LED and optical mouse

I have some super bright blue LEDs here that are 2600 mcd. I also have an optical mouse with a red LED in it that isn't very bright. I'm hoping to remove the current LED and put the blue one in instead (since this is an optical mouse, it's on 5v, and since my LED only takes 3.7, it requires a resistor).

The question is: Will my mouse still track with a blue LED? The red one works okay, but I do get tracking problems.

WEll, i guess it doesn't really matter. I can always unsolder and resolder the red LED back on. :p

I need a 46 ohm resistor for this. Assuming that the stock red LED is rated for 5v, that is.

it depends mouse to mouse some track the same as before some slightly less i would like to hear how it works with a MX series mouse preferably the mx 700

Dunno about the MX series as I haven't modded one, but most mice regulate the forward voltage for 3.3v type LEDs so you shouldn't need a resistor. I would use a multimeter for testing the voltage before actually modding to save yourself from headaches.

BTW you can get 6,000mCD blue LEDs @ Hosfelt (used one of them and a blue/green 12,000mCD from B.G. Micro in my Dual Optical). You might need something brighter or closer to the sensor's sensitivity (i.e. >600nm) to see better tracking. Good luck.

This is an older Logitech optical. It's not that bright...

I'll borrow a multimeter and find out. :) Thanks for letting me know.

I don't have much to add, but yes, I've seen a link a while ago (last year) where people got sick of every mouse using red leds and they replaced them with bright blue LEDs, so it can be done.

Edit: Yes, in the article I read, the mice still worked and the blue light tracked.

oh, it'll still track, i've done it before (probably on the same mouse) but 2600 mcd isn't really that bright. I used a 5k mcd and it worked fine.

Teh stock light is much dimmer than 2,000 mcd.

THere are only gay radio shacks here, none have any LEDs over 2600 mcd. Unless i can get them dirt cheap online, there really wont' be any brighter LEDs for me.

Update: The stock LED is 2.5v. I'm gonna just remove it and use the 5v line from the USB connector inside the mouse itself. Maybe put another LED inside the mouse to make it glow, or remove the cheezy logitech logo and do something with it.

Alrighty. I removed the stock LED and then removed it from it's little holder. I'm surprised I didn't go ape shit and destroy things, I haven't eaten yet today. :D Anyway, since the LED I'm going to be using is higher voltage than the line on the stock LED, I'm gonna use the USB power thing. I think I might solder the stock LED back in and have it light something else up... I hope the mouse will work without the stock LED, though, because I'm gonna need a few supplies before I solder it back in. ;)

Success! Very very bright blue, it tracks 100% better than it used to. :D I can actually game with this now, because it will move correctly. :) w00t!

send me a PM, i'll send you a 5kmcd blue LED if you want to do it over ;P

It seems like you're pretty satisfied with the job though

lol Yeah, I'd like it, but I don't have a use for it. I have a few other spare 2600 MCD LEDs as well, I might have to find a use for them first.

Honestly, I'm sorta scared to try anything over 2.5k mcd. These things almost blind me as it is, if it's double brightness, will it replace the dome light in the room for me? :p
