I've recently been given a gift of a Lead-Free Soldering Iron. Its looks really nice and very expensive. But I don't do any lead free soldering.
I'm wondering if anybody here has had experience with lead-free soldering irons? Can I use lead solder on them? I mainly just do some hobby work, so I'm not big on the lead-free thing yet.

Hi

You can use the same iron, but you may have to change the tip as the lead free solder needs higher temperature than leaded solder.

I personally use the same iron for both types, and just change the tip to make sure I don't polute the lead free solder.

So the tips are different? Like physically? Can I just turn down the temperature and use the same type of tip for both? The station has a knob that controls temperature, and it came with extra tips that look proprietary.

Hi,

You should be fine, just remember that the lead free solder needs higher temperature, so maybe you need to re-solder the tip with leaded solder to get it to work.

Best of luck
