So I have put together the pieces for my new computing machine except for the peripherals and I am now trying to learn about monitors. A couple important things will be affordability and how the monitors run games and movies. I am curious as the differences between CRT and LCD as I haven't found any articles really describing them so I just know LCD is a lot more expensive at the moment :(. Anyways any advice you guys could give in this would be appreciated.

If you have the Money get a Samsung 710T LCD

If you are on a Budget get the Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 930 SB.

I have had both and the 930 is the best CRT Under $500 and the 710T is the ebst LCD

A couple points.

1. LCD isn't really that much more expensive nowadays, if you're comparing a good lcd to a good monitor. Sure, crap monitors are dirt cheap, but the good ones aren't. That price differential is getting smaller and smaller as time goes by.

2. LCD panels are much easier on the eyes. That one feature made me switch to LCD as soon as I could, even with the ghosting issues you find in some games.

3. Even a crappy LCD will have better geometry(perfect, in fact) than a monitor. I don't have to pay to get my monitors calibrated anymore, nor do I have to worry about screwing it up just by moving it.

As a gamer, what you want to do is find the panel with the lowest PROVEN pixel refresh rate and has been reviewed with no significant image quality issues, imho. Another issue to consider is what resolution at what screen size you prefer, as LCD's have a 'native' resolution. Most of them will scale to other rezzes, but few(none?) of them do it well enough that it isn't obviously not running at native resolution.

If you have a need to conserve space, or you wan't to use less power/not heat the room the computer in as much, then go LCD. The Samsung 710T.

However, if size/space isnt a concern, nor the heat output of the monitor, then get the Mitsubishi DP930.

Question answered.

Actually the 930 lets out almost No heat, Coming from a Gateway 13.9" crt which was 7 years old, This big 19" lets out Nothing and even stays cooler to touch on the outside that the 710T's back

Don't embarrass yourself. As someone studying to be an engineer, you should know about power consumption, and heat dissipation.

Edit: Just because I already have the info here, I will post it.

The 930SB consumes 102 watts, therefore, it puts out 348 BTUs/hr.
The 710T consumes 34 watts, therefore it puts out 116 BTUs/hr.

Still want to disagree?

i can tell you that It lets off less heat, so STFU.

How will you tell me, My monitor has been on for about 13 hrs a day playing games and watching movies and I have yet to feel any heat

I can say the case of the 710T did get hotter than the 930 does

Yeah i still want to disagree, you really are a dumb fcuk.

You are telling me when i own both Monitors, as where as you have 1

Dude, how the hell did you pass physics? It is simple fvcking PHYSICS. IT COSUMES MORE POWER FOR CHRISTS SAKE!

Think what you want, but there is no way possible, that the 710T puts out more BTUs than the 930SB, or any CRT for that matter. Do the math...since apparently mine wasn't good enough for you.

No I do I had off of work today,a nd It was raining allday today and yesterday here In NY. So i got A new Monitor and wanted to use it

I know the math and i am telling you that, it doesnt matter. The Crt must be well insulated. or somthing becouse It almost gives no heat.

Im not saying the 710T was hot. I am just saying the back of it got warm after a while. and less so than the 930

And I am telling you that the heat has to go somewhere. You can't just insulate the sh!t out of a CRT and expect it to work perfectly fine and give off little heat. Since CRTs don't have fans, they cool by the heat rising, through vents in the top of the case. The 348btus it puts out, are put out. How they get out, I don't know, but they do. They can't just stay "bottled up" in the monitor itself.

Edit: And you calling me a dumb fvck is quite laughable. You have done enough to sh!t on yourself, I won't have to help you there.

Well i dont know much about the crt you have, but i do know my last crt was a compaq 19" that i had for about 7 years before it died, and that thing got HOTT.My AC couldnt even keep up with it,and I know math too i had a 12,000 BTU AC in a 12x10 room and it still couldnt keep the room cool.

I think both of you may be right :x The CRT does put out more heat because it consumes more power, but this is in total. The back panel of the 710T is probably a lot less surface area than what the CRT has to let heat out (aka the CRT is bigger than the LCD) so the LCD might feel hotter. Now, we all know that the LCD will consume less power/electricity and if you take the total dissipation, the CRT will give out more. Vinny may be right because the CRT has a lot more places to give off heat and thus a certain part of it may not be as hot as the hottest part of the 710T, and Excelsior is right because the CRT does give off more total heat than the 710T.

Yes, Vinny is right about the case of the monitor being cooler with the 930, and that makes sense. However, only because the case is so much larger, and the heat rises. The sides and back of the 930 will be cooler than the back of the 710T. The 930 is still putting out more heat, but it is rising and escaping through the top.

I had a old gateway Monitor and It was impossible to get my room cool with a 8000 BTU AC. and i would sweat sitting in front of it. I can get my room really cold now with the 930 and dont sweat at all. usually On a crt the Screen gets HOT. The screen on the 930 remains cold. Maybe this could be becouse it is Apature grill

I doubt it has to do with it being aperture grill, moreso the advancements made in technology and engineering. Still, the fact that stands that no matter how cold it feels, it is consuming about 3x the power, therefore it creates ~3 times the heat of the 710T. Good day.

but creating the heat and feeling the heat are two totally independant issues. ;)

by the way.

IF you like you blacks looking milky grey. Then LCD is for ya ;)

Are you also denying its heat output because Mr Vinny says it feels cold? Jesus fvcking christ, what did you guys learn in school anyway?

And..since you obviously don't like LCDs, and have nothing worth a sh!t to contribute, might as well stay out of the thread.

Hmm

last time I read the title. It said LCD vs CRT NOT... what is the best LCD?? That is two threads down and on your left

Hook, line and sinker.......

did i say i denied it. No.

Pay attention to detail boy.. school is starting just for you.

heat output produced don''t mean shit when the given radiant surface area is big enough to disipate the heat. Decrease said surface area and the heat WILL concentrate on one area more. Meaning to the touch, the said SMALLER surface area will IN FACT feel hotter than the BIGGER radiator.. HOLY SHIT. Some science!

Before you go opening your mouth and spitting out stupidity and ignorant comment. I would suggest you pay atention to detail. Vinny stated to the touch.. holy shit. Rereading all his post. No where did he state that it PRODUCED LESS HEAT.

This was his observation which is inline with a BIGGER RADIATOR being cooler to the TOUCH!!!

you other assumption.

I don't like LCD.

Hmm odd. Never stated that. I use them at work. I use them at home for normal computing and gaming on LAN's... hmmm. Yeah I guess I hate them  lol

So you just assumed. Not only once but twice.

And you know what they say about assuming:
It makes an ass out of you and only you as it does not affect me in any given way.

Thank you, don't let the door hit your ass on the way out.

/class dismissed and and nice schooling you boy.

A good argument is fine and good, but when it gets personal you can count on a Mod or SuperMod or Admin stepping in. I can tell you that you may be less than thrilled if one of the Admins decide they need to take action.
