Can LCD monitors last as long as a CRTs?

A well kept CRT has the potentential to last 15+ years.

How many years until lcd pixels die, has back-light failure, or gets screen blemishes since what I've seen lcd screens are plastic covered.

If CRT's live longer, I'd rather spend the $500-$2000 on a high end CRT.
 
most CRT's are rated somewhere in the neighborhood of 10k hours. Sometimes even more.

As for LCD longevity. Perhaps one of the folks with experience with one can tell you. Technically it should probably last as long barring any lighting problems.

An LCD will probably not last that long. It depends on use. At work we have 1 LCD going out per week, sometimes more. But they are often powered on 24/7, and most are in use 24/7 (I work in the IT dept at a large hospital). And those monitors are about 3 years old, so not bad overall for life span.

New LCD's can come with dead pixels. I have one on my Dell 2001FP. It isn't noticable. All monitors are plastic coated (it's the anti-glare coating). The only time I see monitors with blemishes, LCD or CRT, is when people keep poking their fingers on the screen to show someone something. I can't stand that.

-edit- I beleive backlights are rated at 50K hours on most monitors. Someone correct me if I am wrong please.

If you expect a high end CRT to be usefull to you for that long, you are dreaming. With the current rate of development of video cart technology anything you buy today will have a limited usefull life of about 5 years. After that the video cards will have far exceeded the monitors capabilities. Would you want to do graphics work or play games on a CRT from 10 years ago? I don't think so.
 
I've had a first generation NEC Multisync 15-inch LCD for a little over 7 years. It still works extremely well. There are a few white lines going across horizontally, but I think it's because I stressed the monitor when spray painting it black. I've also carried it to many many LAN parties (maybe 20 or more?) over the last 5 years. I'm also a avid gamer, so the screen has been on for a pretty long time (from Unreal 1 to FarCry).

I think LCDs could last about 8 years or more considering I didn't see any deterioration of the LCD, except for self-inflicted damage. Just take good care of it.

I'm actually selling it to someone in my dorm who needs more desk space since I'm picking up a new 710T.
 
LCDs dont last as long as crts there was an article in the times about different types of screens they compared projection to lcd to oled to some other stuff crts have better lifespans.
 
Crts can last very long, In my house we have a Sony CRt TV, and its about 15 years 9old and still works great, and it is on aboyt 6-10 hrs a day sometimes more. We just Leave it on

6-10 hours a day is not a lot of time. And you also have to remember that a tv is not the same as a CRT, same basic technology, different implementation.
