LCD control information

Hey,

I'm looking for information about small LCD displays, maybe 3"x3" type thing. These won't be directly hooked up to a computer, instead it will be connected to an ECU for a car (race car which will use the LCD display oil temps and other data).

I'm just looking for basic information on where to start to learn about how to control an LCD, and how to go about purchusing/building a controller for it.

Any information on where to start, books, internet sources, anything will help.
