Hi All,

Planning to gift an SSD for laptop use for my bro to use.

He's currently using an IBM/Lenovo T400, a Core2Duo machine, but is looking to upgrade to a newer Thinkpad T series when they update their Thinkpad line with Haswell processors & chipsets (but can probably hold out upgrading his current machine to about a year or two max). I guess this is relevant but he will not be going the ultrabook route as he is a fan of the reinforced chassis of the T series.

I'm looking at a Samsung 840 Pro 2.5" 512GB SSD. I'm aware that some of the newer laptops have an additional mSATA drive, but I'm not sure if these will supersede the traditional laptop SATA drives. If I go the mSATA route, I will have to select a different manufacturer (likely Crucial for the M4).

The primary concern is reliability while having the option to migrate to a different laptop. If a requirement is that the SSD should be able to be moved to a new laptop (also to serve as its main drive), should I be buying the standard 2.5" drive or the mSATA ones?

Sorry, I have no idea/experience at all about laptop hardware.

Thanks a lot!

don't bother with the mSATA, get a normal 2.5"
I have the samsung 840 256GB in my T520 and it is working great.
I also have the a 160gb intel ssd in my dvd bay.
thinkpads are awesome :)

So no worries about the normal 2.5" drive getting phased out anytime soon?

As long as there are some laptops with spinning drives, I can't see this happening. It's not like they're going to throw 3.5" HDDs into cheap laptops.

But more and more ultrabooks are likely going to phase out magnetic storage options as SSDs become larger and cheaper, we're already seeing the standard 2.5" "bay" disappear on the higher end.

Ordered Samsung 840 Pros. One for my next build and another for the laptop. The units are coming from the US as we can't find them anywhere. Cost about 20$ to ship extra to my country given the light packaging.

Found out that only W7 supports TRIM - But apparently magician is supposed to support Vista as well and help with the garbage cleanup/prevent the SSD from bogging down. Interesting.
