Laptop Processor - Normal to mobile?

I have a P4 Northwood HT 3.0ghz processor in my laptop. I was wondering if the socket/motherboard is compatible with a mobile processo. The socket is 478 and I found two matches to this on newegg. Another thing I was wondering about is voltage. I know the mobile processors run at much greater volatges than normal P4's. Everest is showing a core voltage of 1.475 - 1.55. Newegg reports one M processor at 1.340-1.276V.

Has anyone had experience doing this? THanks
 
If you mean a Pentium M, then no, you can't just switch out a Pentium 4 with a Pentium M. Though they're both socket 478, the pin arrangements on both models are different.

If you're talking about switching a desktop Pentium 4 with a Pentium 4-Mobile, that might be possible, since their 478 pins are in the same arrangement.
 
You can put a P4-M CPU in there and it will work, but it may not work properly. Some laptops use desktop chipsets which don't properly support P4-M CPUs. The CPUs default to a 12x (or for the prescott mobile CPUs possibly 9x) multiplier so you wind up with like a 1200MHz CPU. Check which chipset you have. If it is an intel 855, then it might work properly. If it is an 865 or 845, then it probably won't work correctly.

And as BillLeeLee said, you can't put a Pentium M in there.
 
My multiplier is 15x. Whats the price range on the mobile P4s? Would I see a major increase in battery life?
 
Will the 855 Chipset support hyperthreading though? And if I were to pop in a 3.2 non mobileNorthwood....What clock speed would it run at? My current cpu has a FSB of 533....The one I'd want to swap it out with has a fsb of 800.....
 
OK, if your current FSB is 200MHz (intel terms would be 800MHz FSB), then you definitely have a 865 (or maybe 848 chipset, or some SiS chipset) and a P4-M won't work properly. Whatever your current multiplier is has no bearing on what the newer processor would be. If you put any P4-M in there, you would probably wind up with a 1200MHz CPU. You would gain a ton of battery life, but lose a ton of performance.


I think the 855GME does support hyperthreading because I have seen P4-M 3.06 CPUs with HT, but I'm pretty sure the max FSB is 133MHz. So your 200MHz FSB CPU would run slower.
 
Still didn't anwer my question though, lol...Can you swap out a P4 mobile with a P4 desktop processor?
 
It should probably work, but the cooling system may not be adequate (especially if you try to put a precott core in there). Plus, your CPU will run slower than its rated speed due to the lower FSB (e.g. a 3.0C 200MHz FSB CPU would probably run at 2GHz or possibly 1.5GHz)
 
Well my current proc has a fsb of 133 and it's a 2.8 currently running @ 1.5...so I guess 2.0 with HT would be worth it
