so there is all this buzz about the new HHD (hybrid hard drives) for windows VISTA

well vista is coming out in 6 days (retail)

i have yet to see any "real reviews" regarding these new HHD

are there going to be any out OEM style?

the reason i ask is that my laptop [dell d800, centrino - banias, ddr pc2100, ide ata100]
and i had a hitachi 60gb 7200rpm harddrive which died back in november
i replaced it w/ the hitachi 40gb 5400rpm harddrive that came with the machine

before i get another hitachi 60gb or 80gb 7200rpm or a seagate momentus 7200 80gb for $100 / $120 i was wondering if it would be helpful to replace it w/ a HHD rather than a traditional harddrive

i would assume not since the following:
1. guessing that all HHD will be sATA rather than traditional IDE
2. vista or other major major software (driver or firmware) updates for windows xp (e.g. sp-3) will be required to take advantage of the flash memory

this is all based on my assumption that the [without being able to find much about the inner workings and hardware abstraction of the new HHD] all of the relationship of data between the flash and traditional spindle of the harddrive will be handled by external sources rather than by something handled completely by the internals of the drive.

i would appreciate any information and knowledge (including advice) regarding future harddrive purchase of harddrives for this laptop as the latency (or lag time due to the 5400rpm vs 7200rpm in a laptop 2.5in harddrive) is starting to really get on my nerves.

thanks again.

Pi.

does anyone know anything about HHD (hybrid hard drives)

or is microsoft putting the horse (donkey) before the wagon AGAIN...

and the proverbial bump

Well, your question might be better suited for the Mobile Computing forum, but, really at this point I'm not sure anyone has really used them much
HHDs have just been launched on paper. I haven't seen them around retail or on e-bay at this point. Samsung's was supposed to be out this month, and Seagate's in a few, but that has yet to come about.

nothing yet...

so im guessing its gonna be one of those microsoft releases for hardware - like their dvd support... sometimes windows media player plays dvds w/out hardware encoder, sometimes it complains - but thats a story for another day...

the question i have now is - which should i get?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...2E16822145099,N82E16822146047,N82E16822146229

ive compared the performance of similar (100gb vs 80gb models) over @ tomshardware
http://www23.tomshardware.com/storage25.html?modelx=33&model1=426&model2=394&chart=144
and the results for the benchmarks show each win about 1/2 the time

thanks for the advice

thanks all

i think ill go with the hitachi

yes it does have a lesser 3yr warranty

but its not the warranty i care about
whether its fast and isnt going to die is the problem
ive had a hitachi 7k100 before, it died about 3 months ago b/c hibernation BSOD and i walked for 30 minutes w/ the laptop in my bag on my back over hilly terrain - which killed the drive (scratchy - scratchy)

i was able to freeze the drive and get what i needed for that semester's work (college)
it might still be under warranty - so after i freeze it again to see if i can get any more data off of it - i ill check on the warranty (if 3yr, then ive got - 03/2004 so ive got till 03/2007) and RMA it

thanks for all the help and advice
