I got a laptop hard drive off ebay, but when I got it it still had the HD password on it so I cannot use it. If I hook it up to my desktop and format it will it get rid of the HDD password? If that wont work, what can I do to get rid of it?

What brand of machine did it come out of? Some corporate PC's have HDD lock software. Some Compaq/HP's have that crap.

You can sometimes tell what it came out of if theres a label on it from a laptop manufacturer. That might help. If it is software locked, formatting the drive should take care of the issue altogether.

Some drives BTW have a jumper setting on them for "Read Only" access. Check for that as well.

it isd an IBM Travelstar, and there are no jumpers. I avhe a n identical one that I had the password to and when I enter it I avhe to go itno teh BIOS and disable the password stuff. Does that make it software?

Well theres a BIOS password and theres the HDD lock password. I believe however that you can probably put that drive into another machine, and format it there. You'll find out real quick if you can't.
